Other RPGs more or less like Eschalon?

My power supply unit is messed up so I can't play any game that pushes my processor AND graphics card or my PC will shut down.

So, I'm looking for games that are more or less like Eschalon. They have to be from small/indie studios, since I have probably played all/most others.

I have played Spiderwebs games (and no offense but spiders eat basilisks)

EDIT: Free or available through Steam or PayPal

I have a bunch of indie-produced RPGs listed on my site. Most are made with RPG Maker, so they're only available for Windows. But a few are available for Mac. All I have listed for Linux right now is Eschalon: Book 1.

Windows Adventure/RPGs

Mac Adventure/RPGs

Games I personally enjoyed: the Aveyond series, Asguaard, and The Three Musketeers.
(And Eschalon: Book 1 of course! That's my favorite of all of them!)

I bought the Might & Magic 6-pack on Good Old Games (http://gog.com) a month ago, specifically to sate my appetite for RPGs while waiting for Eschalon Book II.

I had somehow managed never to play these before, and so far, they're alot of fun!

I'm about 90% of the way through "Worlds of Xeen" (when M&M4 [Clouds of Xeen] and M&M5 [Darkside of Xeen] are installed together, they merge into one super-game). I should be finished within a week.

At that point, I may go back and start with M&M1. I don't want to be in the middle of anything TOO interesting when Eschalon gets released... :)

Error:
The setup files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the program.

That's two attempts at two individual download locations.
Ah well...it was not to be.

Interesting. After reading of your troubles, I just downloaded and installed it without any issues. Might want to run a disk check and/or defrag.

If you haven't yet, check out Everlong, if you're looking for a decent old-school Final Fantasy clone. It's free to boot.

Dang, its for PC. Yes, I could put it on the mac but I'm having trouble with it and my son is too involved with 'Lost' to come fix it yes. :) Looks interesting.

Everlong looks good to me and worth a download, thanks Crazy Bernie.
Oh, and yep, I'm going to disk check and defrag in a bit.

No, no, no . . . see: neither of those games can compare visually to Eschalon's beautiful graphics, nor can Spiderweb's games, much as I like Spiderweb's games... .

Of course, if they end up having interesting stories/writing... that's another thing. That ends up saving the game, see? See? Saves the game. Yes it does.

I'll download them and check them out. Thanks, Bernie. Thanks, Ridcully.

Knights of the Chalice does not have much of a story....just enough to keep you headed in the right direction. What the game has, however, is the best tactical turn based combat I have played in the last 10 years. The combat encounters are very well designed and stay challenging throughout the game.

Everlong is cute, and I like the writing, but the interface and gameplay is extraordinarily crude and clumsy. Starting with the keyboard-specific interface (really . . . you can't use your mouse? Really? When was this game made?) . . . then going on to the font, of all things, and then the terrible battle scenes (separate screen, one-on-one, the way that Pirates! did, but of course Pirates! was much, much better at it . . . for one thing, the battle was animated; for another, you and your foes weren't two different sizes; for another, it let you use your mouse). Combat, near as I could determine, essentially consists of pressing your RETURN key until your opponent is dead. Perhaps there're other key options I'm missing.

I have nothing against that separate-screen-one-on-one setup, I like it when it's done right, as Pirates! did (well, at least the refined Mac rewrite... can't speak for the original DOS version) . . . it's just that if you do that, you should make an effort to do it well? Maybe?

Sorry, Bernie, I just didn't like it.

That said, I feel a strange urge to play it again. Go figure.

...As a side note: I've no idea why, with a male-only character, all my foes are women, but... I won't fault it for that choice. It certainly is interesting.

As for Knights of the Chalice. . . haven't spent enough time with it to really comment.

I'll get back into them both, eventually.

Obviously there's some sacrifices made with a free game... ^_^

Stuff like the battle transitions are an old-school jRPG throwback... something you still see quite frequently with modern console RPG's.

As far as the keboard interface issues... the game was designed to be played with a gamepad. It's a limitation of the software that was used to create the game, RPG Maker. It's also responsible for the "crude interface" and strange contrasts you may have run into with some of the UI options.

The software was designed to make it fairly easy to create your own old-school console RPG (with lots of built in and freely available tilesets), but it has a fairly advanced scripting language if you want to create a more customized experience. If I had any talent/patience at all for programming, I'd probably have already made my own games with it by now.

I grew up with jRPG's such as the Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior/Quest so I'm not really bothered by the UI and its limitations. I do agree that the creator's font choices pretty much suck, but considering how much content he gives for the price of the game, I can overlook that aspect. 0_o

Eventually you'll have a party of characters and get to cast spells and use other abilities.

While it's not nearly as good as the original SNES Final Fantasy games, it did keep me occupied for quite awhile. I still need to download the newest version and finish the game at some point.

Oh, by the way, there's a fix for the fonts if they look screwed up.... like the i's and the o's bleeding into other letters. It's a shame that it uses such a custom font... otherwise I'd be hacking a new font into the game... *sigh*

Cool, I'll download it.

I didn't realize it was the entire game and also freeware (I guess I didn't bother reading much about it on their website before downloading it); I thought it was just a demo when I downloaded it.

I've looked at 2 or 3 RPG building programs, before... they're too limiting for me.
