We just wanted to get an idea of what people are using for screens so that we can test appropriately on a accurate sample of hardware.

Likewise! I've got a ViewSonic 19" monitor that I'm perfectly happy with.

I'm on CRT right now (yeah, true gamer here), but I'm thinking about changin' it to some LCD (no, not widescreen).

Thanks. Got Bronchitis in Jan followed by 2 bouts of pneumonia and so weakened I couldn't stand up and had to go to rehab center. UGH! Better now but still can't walk.

I'm so looking forward to this game! :D

My notebook (more sorta desktop replacement ; - ) display:
17" 1920x1200 Pixel (WUXGA TFT, Glare Type)

I had problems with games like "World of Chaos" that plainly flattened the 4:3 display and looked like crap. Only with a little configurations tweaking I got it running (although it crashes all the time, but that's because it's really buggy in general).

So a display menu option with not only 4:3 resolutions would be nice ;- )

We are very limited in our display options for EB1 because we did not go with a true 3D engine...it's a sprite-based isometric engine much like Spiderweb's Avernum engine. Because of that it's essentially impossible for us to offer other resolutions.

The game's native resolution is 800x600. You can play in an 800x600 window on your desktop or go 800x600 full-screen. Most good LCDs scale nicely and full-screen 800x600 looks quite good. If you have a widescreen monitor (like me) and want to play the game full-screen, you may have to go into your settings and simply request that the monitor maintain aspect ratio so that the game isn't stretched out to 16:9. Most gamers who have widescreen LCDs have probably already figured this out from other games.

Why did we choose 800x600? Well after much early testing, it was the all-around best option for speed and visual quality. On small laptop screens it looks good; on slower computers it runs smooth. If we had gone 1024x768 or higher the game starts running chunky on older computers, and on laptops with smallish LCDs the sprites become almost too tiny.

My dev screen is a 23" widescreen LCD and my preference is to play the game in full-screen 800x600.

Well the good news is by the time part 2 comes out you can increase the resolution since by then most computes will be able to run it no problem....but who's to say you won't decide 3d ovrhead s the way to go by then, but 800 by 600 should be ok for what this game is.

Jason Compton from Planewalker Games had the stones to email me and call me out on my post above. :) For those who don't know, Jason is a cool guy working on the RPG The Broken Hourglass. Head over and take a look at it!

Anyways, in his words: "There's nothing inherent to a true 2D engine that mandates fixed-res(olution)...". He is very right.

My statement about being "essentially impossible for us to offer other resolutions" is not entirely accurate. It is actually quite possible to set the graphics mode for any resolution we want; but the other parts are true too, in that running the game at a higher resolution would would make the game run too slow for people with older computers or too small for people with tiny LCDs. But, yes, the game could easily scale up to higher resolutions with just a bit of re-engineering of the GUI.

So, 800x600 is the best fixed-res mode that we could find offering a nice mix of speed and quality for everybody without needing to engineer free resolution switching. We're a bit too late in the development cycle to offer resolution options for this game, but we will certainly offer that in our next. And thanks for the email, Jason!
