Metallica?

Doesn't seem to fit with the rest of your list.
I like almost any epic soundtrack; The Sixth Sense has creepy music that's great for designing dungeons to. LotRs is a given; the Harry Potter soundtracks are lighter but still have a great fantasy feel to them.
One of my favorites is the Tangerine Dream soundtrack to the movie Legend...played lots of D&D to that back in the 80's.
[Edit] Oh, if you mean what are we currently listening to? Man, everything. During the course of the week I'll go through practically every musically genre from Trance to Alternate Rock to 80's New Wave to Soundtracks. Just depends on my mood.

You mean: what fits to oldschool RPG games or just what we're listening to?
If the second option is correct: indie pop rock, alternative rock and soft rock.
A few bands for example: Less Than Jake, Coldplay, The Pixies, Simple Plan, Kyo, Keane, Athlete, Franz Ferdinand, Keiser Chiefs, Maximo Park, Blink 182, Arctic Monkeys, Girls In Hawaii. And many other...

Well... Metallica is really good for particular inspired moments...
I like a lot of music genres.
Other good titels:
Zatoichi (soundtrack)
The Last Samurai (soundtrack)
Some battle music from STar Wars episode 1 and 3: Battle of the Heroes and Battle (something. I can't remember)

If you like Metallica as well as classical-styled music, you should check out Apocalyptica.

Thanks...
here in Italy's not so easy to find some musics (I live in a littel country on the hills in Tuscany), but I'll check for it on the net.
It seems to me they compose something similar to dark, epic and gothic music...
Am I mistake?

Well, basically they're a cello chamber quartet (all classically trained) and they started out doing covers of Metallica songs (instrumental only). They've since branched out into doing versions of some classical pieces (their Hall Of The Mountain King kicks arse) in a sort of "heavy cello" way, as well as some original stuff.
So, no, they're not a goth/epic dark rock group, but I suppose they appeal to similar sensibilities.

Try the Soundtrack from Willow. That is quite a Fantasy soundtrack.
Or the first 3 Star-Trek Soundtracks doing quite a good job. Naturally Wagners Overtures from the Ring-Cycle are great stuff.
But like BasiliskWrangler said....listen to everything...just depends on my mood.

Very true, listen to everything you can. When I'm plotting out an adventure for my gamers I often listen to Celtic songs if outdoor theme or Gregorian chants for in cities and temple adventures.

Hmm.. I tried an Enya CD my mother had. Pretty nice =)
It's a bit unorthadox, but when playing The Burning Crusade I have been listening to the latest Cafe Del Mar v10. It's not very "fantasy" but it has some great crisp and open soundscapes. Especially the intro track "Firewire".. which I had playing the first time I ventured into the very alien lanscape of the Fungal Vale. It was a totally scifi, dark side of the moon, sort of vibe.
I have a Andreas Vollenweider album which is a lot older (60's/70's?) electronic soundscape sound with similar crisp ambience.
I really should grab some darker. medievil sounds as I do enjoy the immersion.

Hi all - I've been a lurker here for a while but I figured it's time to finally register and add to the discussion.
Like BasiliskWrangler my tastes very greatly and I can go all the way from oldies to punk depending on the mood. But, I have a few favorites that are all fantasy themed:
Blackmore's Night - Can't recommend this band enough. Formed by the lead guitarist from Deep Purple - Ritchie Blackmore. It's all medieval/renaissance stylings.
Blind Guardian - German fantasy rock. Heavily themed for fantasy, borders on hard rock to metal but isn't screaming death metal. Nightfall in Middle Earth is one of their best albums in my opinion.
Basil Polidouris - Conan Soundtrack. Probably one of my most favorite soundtracks of all time. Must have worn out a dozen cassettes back in they heyday of my PnP campaigns.
Man-O-War - More fantasy rock. Story albums and fantasy themed songs.
World of WarCraft soundtrack. Love or hate the game, there are some great tracks from it.
David Arkenstone - Great fantasy themed background music. Mostly instrumental. Very calm, great for when you are just relaxing.
Many of my other favorites are already listed... looks like I'll have to ponder this a little more and see if I can come up with any more oddities.

Well I'm bummed, I had a whole lengthy post that went into fairly good detail about ALL the bands I had listed and I mistakenly did a google search in the same tab and lost it all
So here's the list of bands, I just can't bring myself to re-type it all again atm lol
While I recommend all the artists listed, I'll include what I consider as a good starter album
Dark Tranquillity - Damage Done
Enigma - Le Roi Est Mort, Vive Le Roi
In Strict Confidence - Holy
Delerium - Karma
Gary Numan - Exile (extended)
Velvet Acid Christ - Between The Eyes Vol.1 (Dial 8 Bound & Gagged Mix & Pretty Toy are perfect intro songs,) some songs are pretty harsh lyric wise so listener beware

Tangerine Dream (as already mentioned heh) - Exit
Trisomie 21 - Million Lights or Happy Mystery Child
Excalibur - Soundtrack
Just a few of my listening/gaming favorites, perhaps someone will find something new to enjoy
Good Hunting All!

I just hum whatever comes in my head, and I like all sorts of music from broadway musicals, to strange old folk songs to pop music to waltzes to...
My partner looks over from her Mac and says "Music to slay by?"
