roaming around....and where to roam

I have gotten, in the main quest, to the point where lilith asked me to kill queenie.

I decided to goto dark town? darkwood? and along the way met some raptors. they murdered me.

I am playing a fighter.

I am level 7 with str 21, dex 21 speed 19 end 18

have a TH of 13 and a max dmg of `17 my armor rating is 22 and my skills are

dodge 4
cart 2
heavy armor 7
alchemy 4 (plus 3 brew!)
sword 8
bow 2 (which i bought)

I would like to get to that town to give incriminating letter. but I think I need to level up first.

any suggestions?

also, I tend to get my ass handed to me when I fight 4 creatures or more. I can usually survive, especially by running away and resting. I have gotten through part of the grimhold stuff by trying to take one only 2 or 3 gobs at a time. I did kill a warlord but I used my only healing elix II to do so.

I was wondering what areas would be good to wander in.
I have done a lot of the early quests like the potion to the sickie, the sextant, the book in the crypt, the mithril bar.

this game ROCKS!!

Two quick things. The incriminating letter goes to Darkford, which is on the same map as Border Town, just a bit further west.

The town past Lilith is Blackwater, which you'll have better luck reaching from the next map down in Tanglewood, rather than going through Baron's Thicket right now. There are still some tough fights, but you can actually do it at night and mostly run past everyone if you want (put out your torch and just run in a straight line once you get out of the forest, and you can probably make it across; you'll just have a lot of pissed off mercenaries waiting for you when you get back to the middle map).

The run from Liliths to Blackwater can be done with no fighting if you don't mind taking a bit of damage and perhaps use a Demon Oil or two. Best to run south to the next screen and when you get the opportunity, go to the west (screen left) and run from outlaws till you get to the next screen where Blackwater is. Be sure to touch the Oblelisk. When you have more power/levels go back and wipe the maps clean! :D There are a number of trainers in Blackwater so be sure to look for them. They will help a lot.

I think the hive drones are easier than the goblins and of relatively close strength. I'm just more or less following the main quest a wandering around new areas linked to the place I need to go.

Just don't go after the Queen Bee just yet, if you're not yet comfortable with your character's survivability, or the game's tactical system.

One thing, which you probably know already (well, it's only common sense :| -- but sometimes we all forget the obvious things, especially if we've been conditioned by games that let us hack away carelessly at hordes of opponents at a time (coughdiablocough)): just make sure, if you're swarmed, that you make the fight fair whenever possible, meaning: since you don't have any magic (the Entangle spell, specifically) then bottleneck your foes in doorways, or in passages between rocks or trees, so they're forced to form a line and fight you one at a time. ...or find a little inlet in the trees or rocks -- there's usually one someplace, though you might have to walk a bit (you've probably also noticed that you can gain a step on your pursuers whenever you walk diagonally) -- which will do the same.

At all costs try to avoid ever being struck by more than one opponent at a time. This is one major way how Eschalon differs from other games. In other games you can fight several foes at a time . . . well, not in Thaermore, you can't, unless you like taking big risks.

And of course, like Kreador and Dragonlady said: if your character is too drained to fight or not strong enough: RUN as fast as you can to the nearest exit.
