SPOILER:
You must wear 5 bronze pieces of armor: Helm, gloves, chest, legs, and boots. Step on the pentagram by the sign and you will be transported to the hidden room. And, YES, it is very much worth your while to do this as, without it, you can't use the bells, and using the bells is VERY good for you.

Just keep checking shops, really. Or find them in a drop/chest/etc. Patience is a virtue.

And the more patience you have the bigger the reward afterwards.
Oh, and you don't have to carry bronze items around with you, stash them till you have all you need then put them on get what you need and put regular stuff back on.
anyone take off bronze before exiting the hidden room? Can you get out?

Yep. I kept putting pieces in the chest of drawers in Ruel's bedroom near the portal until I had enough to make the jump.

I believe you can just quick-travel out, but I didn't try that without the bronze on.
