Spoilers: Lorewitch Tower?

Spoilers ahead:
If I accepted the quest from Erubor to seek the assitance of the mages at Lorewitch Tower, *must* I complete that quest? Reason I ask - I'm finding this quest of flipping levers in the right order extremely tedious, and the game for the first time is not fun for me. Now, I admit to being pretty lousy at puzzles in general (although I *did* solve the 'double-decker bridge' puzzle in Dragon Age without any help). So, does it matter if I accepted the quest or not? I would have to replay several hours to get back to where I made the decision (including killing the 'main' guy in the thief dungeon - forgot his name). I don't mind having an open quest not finished on my 'quest' screen when I finish the game, I just want to *finish the game*. So, absent someone having a complete walk-thru for Lorewitch, what do I do? Go back several hours or just ignore it? I know I'd be missing a part of the game, but I can live with that... Thanks.
