Questions about to-hit ratings

Okay, so I've started on a "monk" build, strictly hand fighting my way through the first part of the game. I plan to pick up bow skills from the ranger in Wolfenwood later.

My question is related to the hit ratings that show up during combat. I'm going toe to toe with wolves, my hit rating is between 71%-74%, and theirs shows up as 48%-49%.

Why is it that I'm hitting nothing but air and getting nibbled on by these things!?!!?!? :x It's not consistent, and sometimes I do take one out without so much as a scratch. And the fury strike is a one-hit kill pretty often. But last night's gaming had me seriously considering dumping the build and starting fresh after one wolf took me down to critical injury, before I could finish off the last little bit of its health. The same thing happened with three others (I make a point of only taking on one at a time if I can, just in case the game recognizes flanks and attacks from the rear as having greater hit probability).

What's up?!

You're just experiencing the vagaries of (P)RNGs; this has been brought up a few times in the past.

Keep in mind that a coin flipped 100 times in a row could yield 100 "heads," and a run of bad luck is often better remembered than a run of good luck.

The monk build gets really powerful once you raise unarmed combat over 30 and start getting the fury feat every 5 turns, The only flaw is you can't use parry mode.

Thanks, xolotl. Just found one of those earlier discussions.

@Randomizer: sweet! Looking forward to winning with my Jackie Chan build. 8)
