How do I do it? Seems like I am always cash poor. I'd say I am about a third of the way into the game. Thanks in advance

I generally make sure to grind out the Outlanders in the maps east of Eastwillow fairly early to pick up cash from what they drop. It's important to explore as much as possible to find the hidden chests and such. And don't go buying too much. If you're a Ranger, you want one level of Mercantile (or the Merchant's hat) so your arrows cost only 1 gold, rather than 2. That saves a LOT early on. There are times where you're likely to simply be cash-poor unless you build a money-grinder character. You have to simply work your way through and eventually you'll be rolling in coin.

go for Mercantile.

I usually put 4 points in it first.
Around level 7 you get 7x3=21 points.
That`s 25.
War on mercantilism book provides 2 points. Dealer`s Hat as well.

Around 25 Mercantilism you buy and sell at same price.
27 provides nice profit on each transaction , 29 even bigger.

Now it takes several journeys between Kudaad, Dunmore, Eastwilow and Everdale (don`t kill the werefolf yet) to gain several thousands gp to pay for all aviable skills trainers (I never put even 1 point in Cartography, as I can have it for 100 gp) - Cartography, Divination, Elemental, Alchemy, Sword, Cleaving, Mace, Bow, Foraging, Repair. With books those skills are at level 10.
Wether to use Zublin as a teacher or kill him is optional.
Voila!

I always try to go with for the challenge: Untouchable
I have rarely found that I need armor, and it saves a lot of money not to buy it, and have to consistently upgrade it.
In my current character, Qui-Gon, because I'm going pacifist, weapons aren't needed either. This makes money super easy. I've got about 15k in gold right now, and just entered Fathamurk.

But, as Kreador said, bandits are a great way to make money early in the game.
