To kill or not to kill...that is the question

In the first town..starting place, I can pay the Captain for the jeweled sword, or kill the gal who ripped off the Blacksmith.
I've done both and can find no real difference in anything except that I can rip off all her chests if I kill her.
What have you folks done.....

I've always just stolen the sword, and killed her later for the stuff in her house.

Actually, with a creative repositioning of explosive barrels, you can get the stuff from the Town administrator woman without killing her, and there's something behind the gate that lets you get the sword from the Mayor without paying him.

On a dark and stormy night with enough hide in shadows I just robbed her. I threaten him.

That's what I've done. Also taking any torches by the door and in the room to make it even darker. Wait till she is at the far end and swipe away. Haven't managed to trap her in the gated area yet.
