i dont seem to be able to find the Vault in/near Darkwater and would appreciate some tips on how to find it.

Actually it is blackwater. I thought that was buggy too. When Lilth tells you that. Maybe BW was originally gonna call it Darkwater but changed it to Blackwater because of Darkford. Anyways you need to go to Blackwater and talk to people. A good clue is you will find the piece of the puzzle in the bad smelling house. Check the body.

Actually there is no way to do it without having read the appropriate letter, as far as I know. Even if you know what name to use it probably won't work before then.

It won't. It only gives you the option to give that name after you first get that letter.

But before then it gives you the option to type what you like, doesn't it? Suppose you type the right thing (I haven't tried so I can only guess it wouldn't work).

no it is like all the other NPC dialogs. Only gives you selections to click on. When you have the letter it gives you three, when you don't it gives you two.

I tried to open the door to the room with the corpse but i dont have any lockpick skills and my "Lock Melt" Spell isnt Strong enough.

or alternatively, if memory serves correct, you could use the key from the house near the south entrance
