Devil Whiskey

Post by realmzmaster »

What is your opinion of this game? I saw the website and Shifting Sands says that they were influenced by the Bard's Tale. The cost of the game is $24.95 for the download version and $34.95 for the retail box. Has any one purchase the game? if so what is it like and is it worth the money? I am downloading the demo now!

Game is in a solid box with a nice 100 page manual - I think this would be hard to answer unless you have played Bardstale and since I spent over 6 months playing Bardstale I loved this game and the cool thing with it also is it's modable and one fan of Bardstale done a complete conversion of the original to play on this engine :D

Very good game, IMO. Bought it and played it a few years ago. Plays exactly like the old Bard's Tale series, with some added stuff like crafting, and additional classes. Very fun, and very old school (to the point of giving the option to play it w/only the keyboard, no mouse.)

I have been playing the demo of Devil Whiskey. It brings back both good and bad memories about playing the Bard Tale games. I will probably purchase it eventually. But it is not high on my list. I prefer the pseudo 3D perspective, where I can position my characters. I want to be able to see the fireball hit and the arrows fly. If I play a first person CRPG, I want to be able to see the fireball flying down the screen. A good game, but not what I am looking for right now.

Be aware that if you purchase you can only download it for 1 year, then you have to purchase again. I got burned by this personally and will never make an online purchase with this scheme again.

I do but I also have a strong penchant for throwing stuff out randomly; recklessly minimalist I suppose :)

Even so, it seems pretty unfair to make a download unavailable after a year. If the company goes out of business I can understand that, no way to get the game to those who have paid for it, but with digital download I think some leeway should be provided.

Hell, half the reason to digital download is just to reduce all the crap you have laying around. Every other reason to buy a physical copy outweighs the pluses of digital downloading (those being no clutter and getting it in 2 milliseconds instead of after hunting around the stores) - with physical copies you can resell the game when you're tired of it, etc;

I think it just makes sense to provide a download ad-infinitum once someone has purchased it. You did purchase the right to download, after all.

The main reason to digital download (for me) is that you have the game available at any time, very easily gotten to, without having the burden of more stuff to drag around.

There are probably a hundred opinions on this, so take it for what you feel it's worth.

I just starting trying this game out, so I will post my impressions...

Anyone know there to find the bard's tale I re-write in the Devil whiskey engine?

And they're doing a Linux version as well!

However, the demo download page is down - the reason given if you look for the shifting-suns.com site is "This Account Has Been Suspended"

Doesn't look good... :(

Yea the link to the download page for demo doesn't work very well. There does not appear to be great support for this game.

You can find the demo here though.

I just used the first link and chose to wait in line on a public server, didn't take that long.

SOS - of the download links they give for the Linux demo, the only one that actually appears to be offering it is File Planet, where they want you to pay for membership in order to download it...

You know, I wonder how much the technical issues and lack of polish hurt this game when it came out. It seems to me that online support was not all that great and I know its a bit tricky to get your hands on the demo. I mean the main link on the website to the demo doesn't work, seems like that would turn off many people.

I think the game was a bit buggy when it first came out as well.

I do hear many fans of the Bard's Tale game love it, so once I play a decent amount of it I will post some thoughts on here.
