Steering not optimal? What do you think?

Hi,

I have been waiting for this game since it has been announced. Now I tested the demo and have some remarks.

The steering is definitly worse than any other game I played. Even using the "w" key it would be *much* better if I could just click on the point I want the character to go.


Then I would love the screen to scroll when I hit the edges to see more of the game world (even though the parts I have yet been can remain black)

The automap can *not* be zoomed. Damned, I need to get new glasses just to see where I am? This should really change in an update.


So what do you think? Can and should these things change?

Click where you want to go??? come on, haven't you noticed that each step is important and which way you to take to go to one point! Clicking to go somewhere would completely ruin it! Also Steering??? this is a human not a ship, you mean the walking could be done better? maybe... but I think it is quite good as it is?

yes, it is important. But I better click on the step I want to take ;-) e.g. I like the way it is done in Avernum 5....

And what about the Automap screen? Could it be zoomed into?

hmm, but if you hold the mouse in the square you want to go to and click, the guy while walk one step and get into that square no ?

as for the automap it cannot be zoomed, but I haven't had a problem with it, I do agree that if your seeing is not so sharp it could be hard to see,, however you should know that when you have a higher cartography skill it'll be much more clear! Since everything has different colors and the walls are in thicker mark!

I quite like the way movement is handled in this game.

It's the same as ultima7 (apart from the turnbased stuff) I was actually surprised how well it held up over the years when most games moved towards pathfinding.

It's actually exactly like Ultima 6 (including turn-based stuff, excluding party)

And yes it still works fine.

I had no problem with the "steering". Actually the way it is implemented is much like walking. Hold down the mouse button and move or click and move one square. Works for me. As far as zooming, Zoom with just the basic cartography skill level would be kind of pointless. Zoom would only be useful if your cartography skill is high enough to warrant it to see more of the detail. The basic map with cartography skill 1 or 2 is basically sufficient.

Everything form Ultima still holds up well to this day even the game especially 7, I still play it through and enjoy it. It is a great game to take after :) I really hope we can get Eschalon book 2,,, the worlds needs more RPG's inspired by Ultima's!

Avernum 5 point to destination and move is very CPU intensive for finding a path. With all the graphical and AI work in the game, it would slow the game to a crawl for even more powerful computer.

I'd settle for keyboard movement control for single step.

Yes, this is a good compromise. So lets op to get some keyboard control for walking! Anybody from Basilisk reads? That would be great!

I think, having a numpad moving along with a point-and-click ability (pathfinding) would be a Good Thing.
