Usually it seems like the game automatically matches the key to the door, so why wouldn't it if you were picking a lock that you had the key for?

I'm on the first level of Shadowmirk and I know I need to put items in the two chests, but every time i pick up the potions i want to put in there i can't figure out how to put them in there. It keeps just dropping them. I have a Mac, I dunno if this makes a difference. I seem to be missing ...
