Caverns of Underkeep - Graphical Roguelike

Post by joshuasmyth »

** Update ** Hosting problems resolved.

Hi guys,

Just thought I'd mention a game I've been working on over the summer. I'm sure the crowd here enjoys old school games :)

Its called Caverns of Underkeep and is a graphical roguelike (aka - A randomly generated dungeon game) The game is free and plays in your browser. There are also some global highscore tables and anyone who completes it goes on a list of "Legends of Underkeep" - It should be interesting to see who can complete the game using the least amount of turns :)

The game is realitively short and should probably take an hour or two to play through (provided you don't die) - hehe

You can play the game at http://www.tinyfrogsoftware.com/cavernsbeta

Any comments/suggestions/bug reports and other feeback appreciated.
I would like to work on a longer Roguelike one day, and perhaps a shorter one too :)

Although the page loads, all I get in the game area is a grey box with a little red X in the upper left corner. I tried Firefox and Safari. Is your game Mac compatible?

Theoretically the game should be mac compatible because it's java - However, I haven't tested it on the mac, I might have to see if theres a problem - Thanks for letting me know.

It could be it requires a higher level of Java. I am using OS X 10.3.9, which I think has a max level of Java of 1.4.2.

Works fabulously in Camino on a system running 10.5.2 with Java 1.5.0_13. And fun as hell, I love classic style games like this.

Thanks :)

The game requires Java 1.5 as a minimum.

There are some very difficult to track down bugs, the game runs perfectly fine on almost all systems, but there are some random bugs that occur every very rarely - I'm working on improving my error loging system, so I can hurry up and declare the game done :)

Well, that leaves me out, then.

Thats unfortunate, I purposely didn't use Java 1.6 so that more people would be able to play. I think I actually use some 1.5 specifics in the programming, but I might have a quick look to see if I can port it back a version, but I'm not sure...

Edit : Just checked, I can't retrofit it I'm afraid

I don't know if this is a joke but all I see is a parked domain. No game.

Unfortunately no joke - I never got a renewal email and somebody stole my domain, it's been a hectic couple of days.

The games back up now.

Okay, I finally was able to play your game for a while. I had tried using Mozilla (Mac) and that didn't work. So I tried using Safari instead. Was able to see it and java script worked. I got as far as 5th level but had to quit as my wrist was killing me and dinner was served. I just wish there was a way to save your game and continue later. I might try again later tonight.

I played and got down to level 7, not sure how much further it goes... but what I saw was quite fun. Things are balanced nicely. It reminds me a little of Sword of Fargoal, which was a great game. Good job!

Thanks to everyone for trying it. Unfortunately I don't have a mac so I haven't been able to test it on that front, good to know that it works, if not on every mac platform avalible.

Saving has been the biggest request to date. Unfortunately with the random generation of levels its a little hard to implement. I think I will make another similar but shorter game sometime. (Or a larger downloadable game that has saving)

Level 7 is the last level :)

My votes for downloadable version with save. :D

Actually I've only gotten down to level 3, character was level 5. 7 levels? Okay, good, a goal to work towards.

Oh, I was using my Mac G4 for playing, just a different browser program. Haven't tried it with my laptop Mac yet.
