Another "Finished Game/Spoilers" post

Post by BenS »

First of all, thanks for a very fun game! As a Mac user, there's just not a lot of decent RPGs out there, which is why I switched to console-gaming years ago. Now I have a new RPG company to supplement my Spiderweb software games!

I've looked at many finished-game posts, so there's not a lot I can add that you haven't already heard before. So I'll keep my lists brief.

Likes:
Turn-based (including time not passing if you weren't moving!); different environments (desert, forests, etc.); fantastic music!; NPC images; solo character (I'm so used to the 4-person party that I was wary of this, but ended up loving it, once I realized the game was a skill-based, not class-based, game); randomized loot; nice interface; some nice visual effects (e.g., alongside a chasm); ran buttery smooth, but I have a top-end Mac Pro; interesting mix of skills; Cartography skill was quite interesting; non-linear, play at your own pace, go where you can handle it...; alchemy was fun; skill books & trainers (many games have nothing to do w/ loot besides buying more things).

Bugs:
Stuck once entering a new map (luckily had a recent save); my 1st time @ top of Shadowmirk, I stole the 4 items in the chest, so when I returned and got them, I had duplicates of the Widget & Green Goblin key (btw, you should get rid of the latter b/c the 4 keys won't work in the G. Citadel if you have 2 Greens!)

Dislikes: way, way too many typos! Spell-checker would catch some, but by no means all (e.g., vicious vs. viscous). As many have pointed out, the "final boss" battle was a bit anti-climactic. The Stinger was broken and not functional as advertised.

Suggestions for Bk II: run function to get across cleared areas; overall balance (game very hard as a beginner, about right for middle levels, too easy for end levels); spell balance (divination much more advantageous for a solo character than elemental); skill balance (if you're going to keep them all, cap off some so we're not wasting precious skill pts on skills that do very little in the grand scheme of things; even Cartography, which was cool, should have maxed out in the 5-7 range); bigger/longer game!; something to improve the torch-juggling we had to do; don't put in teaser items (like the Widget) that don't actually do anything; a little bit more in the story department--very much a minimalist approach here.

That's about it, off the top of my head. Again, thanks for a very fun romp, and I can't wait for Bk II.
