Has anyone played these sharewhare games?
I started playing book 1 chapter 2 today and was enjoying it. It seems very well made for an indy game. Apparently its a father and 2 sons project.
Only think Im not liking so much is the amount of combat, a little too much for my tastes.
If you like the early might and magic games you will probably like this one.
If anyone has played any of these games, what are your opinions?

Well, I think Might and Magic I was called book one or something like that wasn't it?BasiliskWrangler wrote:Wow, nice find! I see that those bastards stole our "Book I" subtitle!I didn't get too far into it but you're right: it looks like a decent M&M3 clone (which isn't a bad thing at all!).

I like this game, but Im tiring of all the combat, I can barely go 5 feet without fighting....
Any ideas where I could find a download of Might and Magic III? I think its abandonware, but I cant seem to find it anywhere.

http://www.abandonia.com has M&M 4 and 5 (look under "World of Xeen") which shares the same engine as 3. These are all abandonware.
I'd love to be proven wrong, but I don't think abandonware is completely legal. Most companies probably don't care or even exist anymore, but I just thought I'd point it out.BasiliskWrangler wrote:http://www.abandonia.com has M&M 4 and 5 (look under "World of Xeen") which shares the same engine as 3. Yes, I got that one, thanks. I was really hoping to also find MMIII somewhere and I cant. Oh well.BasiliskWrangler wrote:http://www.abandonia.com has M&M 4 and 5 (look under "World of Xeen") which shares the same engine as 3. These are all abandonware.
No, there isn't legal abandonware, at least not according to the letter of the law. Intellectual Properties, sepcifically copyrights, do eventually pass into the realm of public domain (things that companies like Walt Disney have done to extend the life of their own properties notwithstanding), but it generally takes a long time for them to do soLedorax wrote: I'd love to be proven wrong, but I don't think abandonware is completely legal. Morally it's another question. And there are any number of things that companies should do but frequently don't (alas). Woudl that there were more projects like Urquan Masters. I digress.
Of course, you can probably find the M&M collection online for a reasonable price. It's a pretty good investment if you like to kick it oldschool.

I played the Yendorian tale demos a long time ago. Iirc, it was a CGS+ demo disc and the magazine was doing a feature on shareware RPGs, so it had the yendorian sharewares among other things.
I was but a poor broke college student then, so I never got to get the games. I liked them, though one feeling I had was that they were basically Might & Magic 3 but with a certain rigidity. E.g. you *needed* to clear out every single thing in a given area to get enough resources (gold, xp, loot) to be able to scrape through the next area, rinse & repeat. This was shareware portions only, and it was a very long time ago.
FWIW, monsters everywhere is pretty much M&M 3 onward (while true with the first two, it's noteowrthy that they were both more like Wizardry or Bard's Tale. You walked around and spawned random encounters. M&M 3 introduced the monsters on the map thing, charing a new course for the series. Or so memory is telling me right now).
Re: Yendorian Tales
I'm late to this party, but I have all 3 registered Yendorian Tales games. They are a bunch of fun so I registered them all back in the day. The website for the games is dead, so I'm not sure if they're abandoned or not.
Re: Yendorian Tales
Might and Magic I and II had the 'book x' subtitles. Book 1: Secrets of the Inner Sanctum, and Book 2: Gates To Another World.
Good luck finding the M&M collection 'reasonable'. You can't. Thankfully, I bought and backed up the entire thing when it was in stores. I already had 2-5, but I wanted 1. Which turned out to be the worst of the lot, at least up until 8 and 9. I think there was also a special edition of M&M6 which included 3-5, or maybe all the original, pre-3D0 games. Then there was the M&M Millennium Edition which has 3-7 & Swords of Xeen.
World of Xeen was on one of the download distributors not long ago. Either GoG.com or some other I'm not aware of. It's been a couple months.
The site was dead, so I wasn't able to look at it and tell what these games look like. But I seem to recall hearing of them, if not playing them. After awhile, unless I've kept up with the games in question, things have tended to blur.
Peacedog was right about 3, except that you don't have to clear everything to scrape by the next area. You can skip outdoor areas for a bit using the mirror portals in town, get mountaineering, and skip most encounters without much hassle, and find a bunch of loot besides. 3 wasn't as well balanced as WoX in giving out high level items. You could easily, with luck, find yourself equipped with Diamond or Obsidian equipment early on. You could also cheat, going to a secret location using the portal, get 2 million gold, then go to the last town and pick up the two hirelings there for some heavy firepower, or just for their better equipment.
