questions for Basilisk

Post by overtimezone »

Hey everyone, I recently found about this site from reading about the game Eschalon book I from a linux gaming site. I have to say, amazing job Basilisk team! Sucks that CDs are out of stock right now, Ill get the download version instead, while i wait for a restock. :D I am trying to start a game company myself, well actually, just put a game out there for the public to see and enjoy, and I have a few questions i would like someone from the Basilisk Team to answer for me, if they are generous enough to answer me. :) Anyone else can answer too if you want. ;)

First off, how did you create the very cool sprites for your game? Was it just Paint with a really good sprite maker ? Creating assets seems to be the most difficult part of creating a game, wouldnt you agree? Second, do you think theres room in the big competitive market for independent game developers like yourself? And finally, do you have any recommendation for people (like me) that want to be game developers? Im not that interested in making money, i just want to craft a game that people can play. :)

Thanks for your time.

There are soo many games (1000+ a year?) that come out each year, that there must be room for anyone to succeed in making a game on their own. Although, almost any game that is making big money commericial money has probably spent endless amount of time to create that product.

Sprites are mainly made in a 3D program. If you want to develop a game, pick a coding langauge you are most familiar with. Flash seems like a really product to learn to code otherwise, not to mention very visual. And most importantly, it's never just about creating the code for the game. Without good marketing/advertising, your game just won't succeed. If you want to immerse yourself in making a new game, you should check out what is being made each year. Check out these mini-games (tuns of archives) on http://www.jayisgames.com for some really innovative small games.

This brings up, really, a major concern of mine, which is that ever since I lost my beloved Mac to an unfortunate internal accident, I've been having trouble finding a powerful, versatile and friendly paint program for the PC I'm now stuck with. I've tried a bunch, and the best I've found is Artweaver (fortunately it's a free program). I use a combination of that and the very basic Paint program the computer came with.

Any ideas on a program that can match the capabilities of my Mac? I miss being able to easily create and manipulate graphics. Too many of these PC programs are so cumbersome and limited.

I'd love to create games, myself. Unfortunately the graphics issue isn't the major block... I got over my programming obsession back in Jr. High & High School. Now I can't deal with much more than just basic HTML. I remember all those horrible hours, days and nights searching down a bug that turned out to be just about inexplicable.

3D: Blender
2D: GIMP

If you have the money, I suggest 3D Studio Max and Photoshop.

Thanks. For one thing I've been looking for a program that sets transparencies more easily, for website purposes. I hope GIMP does the job.

I don't have lots of money to spare, which is why I don't possess Photoshop.

I downloaded the game a few months back and ran into an error, "deldir". I was no longer able to save or access any of my saved files. I deleted all files and then reloaded the game. Still have the same problem, unable to save game. Is there a patch for this or do I need to get the CD version to fix this problem so I can play?

Might want to post this in the proper Support section rather than hijacking another thread... this will increase the likelihood that it gets answered... ^_^

Incidentally, make sure you delete the save game folder as well as the game folder when you uninstall...
