Registration difficulties?

Post by BasiliskWrangler »

Some of you have noticed spambots hitting the forums again in the past 3 days. To thwart this, we have increased the difficulty of the visual confirmation box when you register.

If you are a guest and are attempting to register but cannot make out the visual code, just email me and I can activate you myself.

You may also want to consider a minimum number of posts before you can post a URL, and stop profiles having a website URL added to them before any posts are made.

Good idea. I'll look into that.

Now that's irony.

BW, you might consider adding rel="nofollow" to all links in posts or signatures - this stops many search engines from indexing pages so linked, and reduces the incentive for including such links.

You may want to consider some kind of question/answer scheme, B/W. Something that relies on knowledge related to the game in some way (even if it's something as simple as "What's the name of the company?") - spambots have a hard time working through something like that (as most of the development work for that kind of thing is used in coding ways to get round captchas). Manual verification if you don't already should be considered, too.

Is it just me, or should all spammers be tortured and killed on prime time TV in a carnival-like atmosphere?

Replace the "Powered by phpBB © 2000, 2002, 2005, 2007 phpBB Group" with an image. Make it point to a links page, which has the link to phpBB's website on it there (so it neither succeeds by looking for the string "Powered by phpBB" nor by finding the link).

Being a mod on another board and the return address for spam spoofing my email address, I agree with the torturing, but death is too nice. Make them have to manually apologize to everyone they wronged. They might make it through 10,000 addresses before they are really sorry.

Edit - Maybe we should include a more torture after seeing the latest spammer.
