For our second monstrous profile, we have chosen the Mire Troll, a rather foul creature that wanders the bogs of Eschalon: Book II. Check back next week as our Monstrous October feature continues with yet another creature profile!

Nice. I already see a situation where the Power combat mode will come in handy, of course that all depends on the troll's armor rating, guess I'll just have to find out eh? I look forward to it.

Now a quick question, does fear of fire mean a weakness to fire, or an "AHH! Burny thing! RUN AWAY!" to fire? The description made it sound more like the latter, which I think would be very interesting. Not that I wouldn't want to kill it for the experience, but I kind of like the idea that after it was wounded enough it would run away from my torchlight. Of course being that it regenerates it would probably be coming back after me soon enough.

I imagine a troll would learn that a "squishy" that shoots fire out of his hands is a dangerous "squishy." At least for a few rounds anyway before it forgets again.

But if it's just a weakness to fire that's fine too, but less interesting.

Edit: "A very powerful fist, used in a bludgeoning manner..." Hehe, any other way to use a fist? Methinks Saint Gilhelm likes to sound smart with words of prodigious magnitude.

On a side note it would be cool if we could use torches as weapons, perhaps not too effective in combat (tendency to break being weakened burning wood), but very nice for burning down wooden doors. And perhaps igniting trolls.

Not to be a grammar/spelling nazi, but shouldn't that be "lest it will regenerate its health ???

I second the idea that pulling out the flames gives it a chance to run off in fear, or at least back up a bit before re-engaging. Well maybe if they actually take fire damage that is...

Yep, a quick check with dictionary.com confirms that you are correct. {fixed}

Woohoo!!! Well, technically it should read "lest it regenerate its health," or "lest it has a chance to regenerate its health." You don't need the "will" there... er, ok I'll be quiet now. *whistles innocently*

Go figure; my most hated subject in school was one that I was the most adept at.... >.< I blame it on my love of reading, which leads into my love of RPG's for their storylines... ^_^ I should have just majored in English and became an editor.

I have been waiting for a character that regenerates. Finally. Thank you.

I feel like I'm cheating now -- I know how many rounds I have to beat the guy in, and what his weaknesses are...I usually just play games and figure it out as I go along, but now I know ahead of time...maybe I should stop reading these descriptions.

Nah.

Well, there is still so much for you to consider. For example, did we mention whether or not they are solitary creatures or live in small clans? Because trust me, it makes a whole lot of difference whether you fight them one-on-one or four-on-one!

But I completely understand what you mean, crazybecky. Long time pub visitors have heard my rant before: I think most developers expose waaaaay too much information about their games before they are released and so by the time you get their latest game you've seen 100 screenshots, a dozen video clips, read a multitude of detailed previews, and feel like you've been walked through it already. This is especially bad for an RPG where discovery and story plays a huge role in the game's enjoyment.

With Book II, we are making sure that there are lots of new elements that will not be discussed beforehand. We will limit screenshots to just a couple every few months, and you'll only see one promo video for it released around the time it reaches beta. There will be lots to discover in Book II! :)

Very nice indeed. Let's see...

Immunity to toxins - check.
Weakness to fire - check.
The only thing missing is their overpowering stench.I'd better smell a troll before I run into one.

Actually, you may not smell it coming! Since you are in the marshlands it will smell like the marshlands! Also it may not be dumb! It could be an ambush predator, sinking just below the marsh or bog surface to look like a rock with algae growing on it! Get to close or step on it and bye bye! adventurer. Since thirst and hungry will play a bigger part in Book II, I can see an adventurer going down to get some water to boil (What you think you can drink marshwater straight?!), then Blam! the fist from nowhere and lights out!

The possibilities!

Now that is an awesome troll:)

Lookin good so far Bask, can't wait to see some of the new elements you added. Loving the discriptions, have you guys thought about adding a mionstrous compedium in game that gets those discriptions when you find books or what not in game? The witcher did this quite well and its a shame not to use these great discriptions.

I beg to differ. Trolls don't smell like marshlands - they smell much worse. Have you ever smelled a troll?
They dumb, too.
