Good Old Games

This site looks promising - I've been trying to get my hands on Fallout 2 for a while, at a reasonable price, and this might just be the place to do it.

You can still buy Jagged Alliance 2 around the web as well. It has been patched by the fan base over the last 10 or so years since it was released, to version 1.13, so it's amazingly good now.. it was already very very good but now it's amazingly good.

They've released a Linux version of it as well too, Jagged Alliance Stracciatella. You need a copy of the original game to play this Linux port; you can get a copy of the game on Steam or on some other sites.

I'm planning on doing a post about its continuing evolution on my gaming blog, The Philosophical Gamer. (Shameless plug, I know)

Unforunately, it is much easier to find an old game in DOS or Windows format than Mac format. When you do find the game in Mac format it tends to cost considerable more than it's DOS or Windows counterpart. It simply came down to numbers. Rightly or wrongly there were and are more gamers using the DOS and Windows format. Hence more copies lying around to be put up for sale. Games in the Mac format were produce in smaller quantities to meet the demand and usually after the DOS or Windows release. Like finding a copy of Neverwinter Nights for the Mac, the cost differential between the Mac and Windows format is like night and day!

Well, for kicks I signed up and got into the beta for the GOG website. The biggest appeal to it was the fact that the games are certified to be Windows XP/Vista compatible and that they give the option to download the manuals, soundtracks, and even things like the quick-reference cards to go with it all. They give you an unlimited license to install the game on as many computers as you want (provided they're in your household, of course) and encourage making a backup copy.

So I signed up, and purchased the original Fallout since I never completed the game (I borrowed it from a buddy who beat it and recommended it to me, and ended up giving it back to him because I stopped playing... gotta love that ADD). This was yesterday at around 4pm and as of yet, I still do not have a copy of the game on my computer. If I use the standard download link it times out after a fairly short period of time... and I can't get FDM to work with it even if I put in my username and password for the site. If I use their own new downloader, the thing either stops or randomly pauses the downloads and eventually I can't get it to unpause. I then have to remove the download and re-add it through the GOG site. I just started a new download of the game (with their downloader) and it's already stopped @ 44.3MB. It's obviously not my connection since I can download all day long from anywhere else. I sent an email to their support team, so we'll see what kind of turnaround/response that comes by. As much as I'd love to get my hands on a copy of Die By The Sword, I'm certainly not going to make another purchase if this is going to be a continuing theme.

As it stands, if they don't get this ironed out then the site's going to have some trouble staying alive once they "go live."

shortly after my original post, I purchased, downloaded and installed Fallout 2 with little trouble. I could only download 2 items at a time, as that seems to be all Windows would allow - but I didn't run into the issues that you have - sorry you've had a bad go of it so far.

Well, I finally tricked it into fully downloading. Whenever it appeared to freeze I paused the download, closed the downloader, then re-opened it. I had to do it 4 times, but it finally finished! Woohoo! Time to venture out into the wastelands once again!!! Well... maybe after this Eschalon session....
