I threw away a goblin key

Post by Smoke131 »

**POSSIBLE SPOILER**

After I found the key from the goblin warlord in Grimmhold, I threw it away. Way later in the game I come to find out that I need it to beat the game. Now is there an alternative to entering the last area if you don't have all 4 goblin keys? If there isn't I am going to have ask the developers why they didn't make it to where items that are crucial to game completion are flagged to be undroppable.

**END OF SPOILER**

Sigh. I did more research and I found out that yes I have to have it. This sucks because the key is destroyed and gone forever. Why is it other items are undroppable but this crucial item is not? I am not about to play through this game again just because of this tiny problem. That means I won't be finishing this great game, which also means I won't be buying book 2.

There is a way to get around this - you have to 'clone' one of your other three keys.

Search these boards for the Char file copy/Quicksave method for duplicating items. (It's considered a 'cheat', so you may find it in a 'cheat' topic.)

If you do this, you should be able to 'clone' one of your keys.

You only need four Goblin keys - it doesn't matter which four you have.

Beyond this, you've learned a couple of pretty valuable lessons - 1) don't drop objects, and 2) save multiple copies (in different slots) of your important games so you can go back to earlier save points if you made a mistake like this.

Your game is salvageable.

Check out the "workaround" section of this forum. I couldn't find the last key through a bug, and they showed me away to clone one of the keys. Its simple and it got me through the game the first time.

What items aren't droppable? AFAIK, it's only torches that you can't get rid of...

Anyway, as others have mentioned, there's ways around it. The easiest way is probably the Shadowmirk Level 3 trick, which you should be able to find elsewhere on here (PM me if you can't find it; it's a pretty easy trick).

I found an miscellaneous item that WAS undroppable. It was called a burely acorn. The game said basically that I can't drop it because i feel compelled to hang onto it. Then the game says I should keep in my inventory or find a chest to put it in. There are items that are undroppable besides torches. So clearly the game does have implemented a nodrop flag for certain tiems. I just wish the developers put this flag on the keys. I let the game go still. I shouldn't have to resort to a cheat to finish the game.

The burly Acorn is a quest item, but then again so are the goblin keys. Hmm...

Or rather the Goblin keys are an "intermediate" quest item, necessary to complete a quest but not directly they just get you past an obstacle in the way of the quest so I guess they don't have to be regarded as quest items, though you're right they should be undroppable.

I actually tend to believe the opposite. The "you feel compelled to hold on to <item X>" feels like kind of a cop-out to me. IMO, any item in the game should be droppable, and if you happen to drop a quest item somewhere, then you just kind of screwed yourself. :) Then again, my favorite games are still the old Infocom / Sierra adventures where sometimes neglecting to even pick up an item during the first few screens of the game could mean losing the game towards the end. Games without safety nets == more fun. (Though I do realize the irony of this statement coming from someone who's built a character and map editor for the game.)

As an aside, I think it's pretty clear, in general, which are important-to-hold-onto items and which aren't. It would never have occurred to me to try and drop the Burley Acorn, for instance, since it was clearly an Important item in the game, and ditto for the Goblin Keys (then again, re: the keys, I could never convince myself to drop ANY key in the game, since doing so seemed rather foolish).
