Puns can be very difficult trans-lingually. Think more écrasement than merveilleux.

Spoiler:
It's a reference to a weapon type - bludgeoning.

smashing means "fracassant" does it have something to do with bludjeoning?

In English, the words smashing, crushing, and bludgeoning are all synonyms. That's why the pun in the clue doesn't translate well to French.

Most of us got the womb one wrong so don't feel bad. I had to figure it out by finding a spoiler here on the board. Good thing it isn't necessary to solve that riddle in order to finish the game. ;)

The problem I had with that particular riddle is that there was more than one potential answer - I mean, who's to say that the Acorn from that one Blackwater quest wasn't the answer to that riddle?!

I hope BW is a little more precise with his riddles in Book II... :P

if a riddle doesn't puzzle us it's not a riddle !

I got that riddle right away, but it might be because it's similar to one in a children's song that I heard.

The one I had trouble with was the the "consumed by fire" one because I tried items that could be consumed instead of the final product.

I too made the Burly mistake initially, and for some reason consumed by fire didn't seem as straightforward as is was. And I've posted before of my successful riddle goof in Whistling Cave, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I've learned from experience that humor and particularly puns and other plays on words are the last things that translate from learning other languages, I mean I know the German jokes I've read are funny but by the time I figure them out my response is an "Oh..." instead of a "Ha! HaHa!"
