Question
Will you be able to disable this screen: http://www.basiliskgames.com/images/eb2_screen2.png
possibly at the start of the game during this screen: http://www.basiliskgames.com/images/eb2_screen1.png
Achievements are lame, not to mention immersion breaking, IMO. Now I know some people might be interested in the number of portcullis kills, or how close they are to a 'true thief' so they could set the statistics and challenges to be part of the game, but the rest of us wouldn't have to be bogged down with that superfluous information.
I am, however, so glad to see that equipment deterioration is optional. Of course, some people like that challenge, so they can check that box if they wanted to, just like food/water (something I'll leave on). The achievement screen is the same kind of thing.

Wait, where is this information coming from? I just got back home not too long ago!

The screen shots are from the book 2 homepage.

Re: Disabling statistics and challenges
The Stats and Challenges screen is something you can access from within the game. You can't disable it, but rather you just ignore it if you don't care to follow it.
In the Game Options menu is a setting that you can check to disable notifications of failed challenges...so the first time you cast a spell, you won't get the message: A spell has been cast. The "True Warriror" Challenge has been failed.
The Rules screen is seen only at the start of a new game. Once you choose your game rules, you cannot change them.

Re: Disabling statistics and challenges
Well I figured the rules can only be changed at the start, or else it would be extremely broken. Challenges just reek of achievements, but I guess since you can disable them... It's just that, once a game starts going down the achievement route, it becomes less about the game and more about the achievements. The stats seem kind of arbitrary, like portcullis kills. Is the screen just a mock up, or is killing people via portcullis crushing a valid way to play through the game? How about TNT or poisoning? Why are bow kills and magic kills counted, but not swords, hammers, etc? By the time you get into all that though, you're tracking more things that reasonably should be tracked. The best lock picked will become pointless once you get lucky and pick one really good lock. The game-world time, on the other hand, is a pretty nice one to have.
Yea, I haven't been around here long, it's just that book 1 has no, as far as I can tell, immersion breaking moments, and I haven't encountered that in a game in a really, really long time. I just think it would be nice to have an option to disable the s&c in the rules for people who find that kind of stuff jarring in an RPG. Maybe have a check box for "Track Game Statistics" and one for "Track Challenges" in the rules?

Re: Disabling statistics and challenges
First off I'd recommend against seeing this if you haven't beaten the game yet as it does contain spoilers... but have you seen the Challenge Games thread yet in the Book I forums?
This is from whence the stats and challenges feature for Book II came from because a lot of players beat Book I and enjoyed it so much they decided to beat in strange and unusual ways. (prompted by mortification8's idea of course)
It's not meant to detract from the immersion but rather to facilitate re-play-through challenges that we're going to doing anyways because we love the game so much.
I for one will likely not be going for challenges my first play-through (Definitely will in subsequent ones) but wouldn't mind seeing my rank and what challenges I may have completed by chance.
Secondly I'd recommend going for a Book I challenge not necessarily in an effort to get it perfectly but just to alter your playing style to experience the game in a new way. I know I've had more fun because of it even though I've not succeeded in actually completing even one. But anyway everyone is different and no two people are not on fire. awwwww...
