Ugh...

Post by azraelck »

Well I can't recommend Inkscape anymore. I've been working on some artwork for my game (no I won't show it. It's horrible enough right now to cause cancer in lab rats), and pretty much every time I try to save it crashes. Paint is working much better for me right now, which is sad.

At any rate, I'm installing GIMP, which I used to have when I ran Ubuntu only on a desktop. I probably have it on this one's Linux partition, but Ubuntu doesn't like my laptop much.

What program(s) did you use to create the artwork for Eschalon? I'm not shooting for near as good (just shooting for something that doesn't cause eyes to bleed), but it might be worth the investment.

We use Photoshop.

I do have the latest version of GIMP installed because there is one thing I need it for: it saves .png files "properly", Photoshop doesn't. GIMP is very powerful and with each new release is becoming more and more competitive with Photoshop. I'd even say at some point I could favor GIMP over Photoshop if they'd improve GIMP's layer controls.

If you can't afford Photoshop, then GIMP is what you need to be using.

Yeah, I spent a couple of hours playing with GIMP last night. Not quite sure what the heck I'm doing, but I like the state of my logo right now. Can't quite figure out how to place a layer of text on there yet, or for that matter find a decent font. I had a decent design worked out in Inkscape by freehand, but it simply crashed instead, and corrupted the same file. I do wish GIMP had a calligraphy tool like Inkscape's.

I had beta tested v8 or so of Photoshop, but haven't touched it since. Back in those days, I never thought I'd have a need for that much power.
