Divine Divinity
A lot of people don't talk about this game. But Basilisk looks like they havent forgoten about it. Great game. For those of you that never played it.
I've heard lots of good and lots of bad about the game. I played the demo, it didn't really do anything for me, basically being a hack and slash RPG format.
It's not free, but it's probably very cheap to buy now. There's a sequel called Beyond Divinity which I've only heard terrible things about.

There are worlds out there where the sky is burning. And the sea's asleep and the rivers dream … People made of smoke and cities made of song … Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice, somewhere else the tea's getting cold!
Divine Divinity, is an average game right up till the end of the demo. It gets complex and very fun. But you are right; it is a little too much hack and slash. But the story line and "new" material that they added really made the game fun to play the longer you play. And I have found that is the opposite of most games.
That's very true, often games start good and towards the end start to falter and become very un-interesting to play.
DivDiv is one of those games that if I ever see it in a bargain bin somewhere, I'll pick up. I've seen Beyond Divinity in bargain bins and avoided it.

Divine Divinity was a very nice game and very fun.. A lot of hack n slash but still a good experience:)
It did have some balance issues though. As soon as you got your hans on a freeze weapon you became invincible:/.. It's a bit weird when you get to the final boss and you can hack him to pieces with dagger you found just out of the starting town:/

The demo didn't really stick.
I didn't really like the demo. I have played two games recently which are in the 2000-2005 range. I like isometric games either single player or party based. I am more interested in storyline and plot.
I just finished Kult Heretic Kingdoms -- Most would consider this a B rated game. What really sets this apart is the story line. Original and controversial background. I also liked the character development system. It is different. What is interesting is the healing system which is worth looking at.
I also played Evil Islands by Nival. This is a very interesting game. They have multiple sneak modes, you can crawl, sneak, walk, and run. This means that you have to use strategy to get past many of the more dangerous monsters. Early on fighting ogres gets you killed pretty much instantly on normal mode, however it is easy to sneak past them. There are also several places where you have to lure out monsters then run past them to places where they can't get you. There is lots of crafting. All of the items are made by crafting. It is once again rated a B game by many people, but it has a lot of very interesting unique features-- the crafting system, the movement system, and many other things. This is a strange kind of real time game. You have to play it to understand it.
I am looking for more isometric top down 3d games to play with unique features and game play. An original storyline, unique game mechanics, and real roleplaying would be good. I enjoyed playing all of Spiderweb's games as well. I really like quality isometric 3d games. Any suggestions would be great.

I am Myt where's the cheese dip.
Divine Divinity was one of the few games I have played recently that had that 'just 5 more minutes' factor. For me a hugely enjoyable and underrated game.
I have played Beyond Divinity and game up after about 10 hours; the factors that made Divine Divinity enjoyable seem to be missing from this game.

Divine Divinity starts off like a Diablo clone, but about 5 hours in, becomes an Ultima 7 clone. I used to champion this game on the web boards back when it came out, encouraging people to stick with it. Because of that, a lot of people ended up liking it (On the GameFAQS boards anyway, heh...) and I felt I accomplished something.
"DivDiv" was a large game. A DEEP game. A game that combined the land mass and exploration of the Elder Scrolls games with the clever quest goals and well written story of Fallout. While the combat might have been a bit iffy at times...it worked.
Beyond Divinity, unfortunately, was nothing but a hack n slash game. I won't even acknowledge it as being a spin off, let alone a sequel to DivDiv

Does DivDiv allow for multiple gameplay options, such as either different character classes or potential skill/ability builds? Can you play, say, sneakily, using ambush hit and run tactics, or even use stealth and guile to sneak past or bluff/persuade/intimidate opponents? Or is it pretty much all-out hack and slash, albeit against a well-developed background?

As far as i remember you can't use sneak to very much, not even sure you can sneak. You can however choose some backstabbing bonus which is aplied when attacking with daggers and such.
Iirc there is some places in the game where you can bluff abit or play the honest warrior.
All in all it's mostly hack n slash... But very fun hack n slash
