Yeah, I bought Torchlight and Dragon Age which pretty much burned through my fun money for November. I kinda wish I would have just bought Borderlands instead, because the other two games have left me unimpressed. :(

You are honestly unimpressed with dragon age? Seriously?

I am seriously unimpressed, meaning I don't hate it- I just thought I'd be far more impressed by it. I am finding the storyline really uninteresting- often entire sequences are taken straight from the Lord of the Rings movies. Also, I much more enjoy the openness and freedom of an Elder Scrolls game, whereas Dragon Age clearly sticks you in small linear maps rather than an open, expansive world. If you miss a quest while in one part of the game, there's no going back to finish it. And then there are the things like automatic healing after battles that really reminds me I am playing a modern RPG and not a classic.

Oh, and what about equipment swaps during battle without penalty? You guys got on us for allowing it in Book I (which is fixed in Book II) but in DA I can do all sorts of of things while the game is paused with nary a penalty! :P  Overall, in general, it's a far more mediocre RPG than most reviews are granting it.

Well, we will just have to agree to disagree...I find the interaction of characters and the storey quite good...and a mix throughout the world of back ground and information. I think the game aims for more of a storyline game not so much a elder scrolls style. I don't know, for me it just feels as good as when I booted up an ultima of old or BG.

Erm.. There wasn't a Fallout 2 comparison... however, there was a Fallout 3 comparison. They're technically both Hybrid Action/RPG's, but have a completely different feel, which is why I said it was difficult to directly compare them. And I wouldn't consider Borderlands to be Post Apocalyptical... unless you're refering to the ancient beings that used to reside there... and there's no particular indication that there was any sort of apocalypse. It's basically just a desert/hostile environment planet that has value in it's abundant minerals. In the end I suppose there isn't much difference... but there it is.

Now, if you took Fallout 3's storyline, character interaction, etc, and merged it with Borderlands's style of FPS gameplay... that would be simply amazing. My biggest gripe with Fallout 3 is that you can't really play successfully without V.A.T.S., and when you get your weapons skills high enough, all you do during combat is play the game in slow motion.

In Borderlands, while accuracy does have a noticable effect, it's far more manageable than F3 was. If you aim down your sights and have an enemy targeted, you're generally going to hit it. With F3, I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn unless I used V.A.T.S... then it was slo-mo headshots all day long. I'd guestimate that the slo-mo added a good 20-30% to my playtime in F3. I got annoyed with the slo-mo after about the third time it happened. >.<

With B-Lands I generally don't use a gun if its accuracy is under 90%, unless it's a shotgun, or an SMG/MG with good recoil reduction.

I don't think he's supposed to be accessible... it seems like he's there to taunt you. After he shouts "Over Here!" then laughs at you.

Honestly he just ended up landing on my head and didn't cause any damage... I think I had jumped just before he landed on me... it probably screwed up the collision detection. I did find that I could duplicate it with the Siren if you time his jump with a phasewalk... if he lands on you while you're phased he gets stuck like that as well. He's pretty easy to defeat in single player...

I sort of agree with both of you here. I think the storyline is very generic high fantasy and I was hoping for something different, but it does contain alot of background lore and information which is good. So while its not very original it does show that they spent alot of time developing the world and the cultures.

I completely agree with Thomas on the lack of openess to the world. I also much prefer a freely explorable world but I think this is just a preference in my gaming style. Some people like the more linear storyline driven games. I always felt like "If I wanna watch a game I will watch a movie" when playing these type of games.

Definitely agree on the auto health regen and weapon swap penalties.

I wont say this is a classic game, but im still enjoying it for what it is.

I used to go to the movies a lot with friends, and after leaving the theater, someone would always ramble on about what was wrong with the movie. I never really had much to complain about... much to the amazement of my friends, especially when they all agreed a particular movie was horrible. The best example of this I can think of is Battlefield Earth; everyone hated that movie, but I thought it was fine.

I've since come to the conclusion that some people are better at enjoying something for what it is, rather than what they expect it to be. This applies not just to movies, but video games as well. Some people let themselves get so hyped up about something that they are seriously disappointed when it doesn't live up to that sometimes self induced hype. I'm pretty good at enjoying most games that I choose to play... the only reason I don't finish most of them is because of my ADHD... there's always something shiny around the corner to distract me.

That being said, I'm certainly not immune to bad movies/video games... if the creator tries hard enough to make it horrible, then even I will be affected. I stopped watching Startship Troopers 2 about 30 minutes into the movie... I just couldn't bring myself to keep watching the worst special effects and acting I'd ever experienced. Also, after beating the game Timeline in under five hours, I was so disappointed/disgusted with it that I popped the CD into the microwave. The resulting fireworks was far more enjoyable.

I Agree with you soooooo much. I've probably seen the original 40 times since 97 (theater included).

This is True - my self induced hype revolves around waiting to get the game - I usually have to wait ages before I have paid my layby's off to get something and they sometimes run into the 12 or 16 weeks just as well they know me well down at EB games :) I have no expectations of what a game should be like, I play them to have FUN and if there are NOT I move on - If i had a scale from 1 to 10 for "Fun Factor" I'd put Borderlands at 9 :)
