So I've been playing through Book I again since I got tired of waiting for the new one and I remembered a little exploit that makes the game much, much easier to play.
Basically, the longer you rest the more likely you are to be awakened by a fight, yes? So why bother resting for long periods of time? Why not just go "C, R, *pause, *click, repeat" and sleep in bursts of an hour or so? Being as I am playing as a pure mage with no armor or weapon skills this time I have been doing this A LOT. Especially since potions are expensive and, until level 3, mostly useless.
The way to avoid this unrealistic rule-bending, it seems to me, is a simple algorithm wherein the amount you heal while resting increases the longer you rest - much like the random encounter chance. This would not totally remove the exploit, but it would at least give a reason to rest in large chunks - particularly because resting for longer periods of time for the same effect would place a severe drain on your rations.
Anyway, I realize you're very near the release of Book II, BW, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. I've been lurking around here for a couple years and figured I'd finally make a useful contribution since I don't recall ever seeing it mentioned. It may be too late to act on it, but it seems like a simple fix to me, and if not, keep it in mind for Book III.

Re: Easy exploit
[moved topic from the Book II forum to the Book I forum]
Yes, that exploit has been mentioned before.
However, in general, what you are doing is realistic: you are taking short naps to stay vigilant against intruders in your campsite. When monsters show up it is because they've sneaked up on you as you slept- by waking frequently and checking the area, you are guarding against enemies who my otherwise be looking for a good time to ambush you in your sleep.
I think the best way to deal with it would be (as you said) to lessen the amount of healing you get from short periods of sleep. We'll look into that- I don't think it will be part of Book II's initial release, but we can work it into an update if it is needed. It might also be something to add for the Book I Platinum Edition.

Re: Easy exploit
Guess someone beat me to it then.
But on the point of realism - what I meant was if you take 8 naps in a row it won't do your body nearly as much good as a solid sleep would. You'd stay within the first two stages of sleep. On that note, however, I will be the first to point out to myself that it is a video game and realism isn't exactly necessary. I just started to feel like I was cheating, and had to stop. I mean, I was running around at level 3-4 killing Barrea Mercenaries, acid grubs, and taurux by just running to another screen and burst-sleeping when I ran out of mana. I shouldn't be able to do that. It breaks the game if you're a mage. Especially since monsters don't seem to heal when you camp.
Good to know it is being looked into.

Doesn't this get a little tedious, though? Hit, run, rest, run back, hit, run, rest... .Entity wrote:I just started to feel like I was cheating, and had to stop. Also, I seem to remember that opponents healed somewhat after I went to another screen, rested, and returned... but I suppose if you're only resting for very short periods then your enemies wouldn't have enough time to heal.
Certainty: a character-driven, literary, turn-based mini-CRPG in which Vasek, legendary "Wandering Philosopher", seeks certainties in a cryptically insular, organic, critically layered city.
Re: Easy exploit
i also realized when i first played this game how easy it is to duplicate items lol
