you can:

* beat it down with weapons (fists, sword/axe/hammer, powder kegs)
* use lockmelt or even better, fireball (more damage, just be sure to stand far back so you don't injure yourself), fire dart (not as much damage but you don't need to worry about being injured from splash)
* pick the lock if your pick locks skill is high enough

if you're playing a mage, try using the spell that enchants weapons for additional fire damage

I believe you mean hybrid fighter-mage. the pure mage lockmelts it (a possibility you already mentioned)

no, I meant a mage.

easy enough to pick up a weapon (even if you didn't spec in it) and use it to beat the door down. it might take longer though.

most [pure] mages in tabletop games are allowed the ability to wield a melee weapon. that's where I was coming from.

To my knowledge, yes. I believe a mine foreman or someone to that nature was originally going to carry a key, but never made it in. The door isn't overly sturdy, and there are extra powder kegs lying around in the mine.
