chronometer?
Should I buy it? Like a noob I've been investing in Cartography... should I get the chronometer as well? Seems logical, but is it a waste? I'm a cheapo and don't wanna spend money but what the hell right? Lemme know...

Re: chronometer?
If you find one you might keep it to know when it's light outside, but it's heavy and pretty useless.
Re: chronometer?
Two points on this topic:Randomizer wrote:If you find one you might keep it to know when it's light outside, but it's heavy and pretty useless.
1) What Randomizer says is kind of true, but Chronometers are lighter in Book II than they were in Book I - in Book I, I think they weighed something ridiculous like 12(!) pounds! in Book II, IIRC, they're only 5 or 6 pounds. Heavy, but not unreasonably so anymore.
2) The Chronometers will not work unless you have v1.04 - so don't bother getting one if you're still playing v1.03 or earlier.

i've just read that chronometer won't work unless you have version 4, has that been released yet

Re: chronometer? v.4 release
Version 1.04 is in beta. Check the Windows support forum for a download link if you want to use the beta, with all that entails. The chronometer I never particularly found useful, but your mileage may vary. Some people love it.mgbmgb wrote:i've just read that chronometer won't work unless you have version 4, has that been released yet

I've just read that some people love it. Can I get a chronometer so I can love something, too?
(Sorry: joking, joking.)
(Seriously, though... don't remember ever seeing one in Book I. Strange... .)
(By the way, Bumpkin: Investing in cartography is no noob obsession . . . I had to have 4 cartography every time I started a new game in Book I.)
(In Book II, however, I had to make due with just 1 point, and grin and bear it for a couple of levels. Not as harsh an experience as I thought it'd be. It used to be I couldn't stand those weak 1-point maps.)

Certainty: a character-driven, literary, turn-based mini-CRPG in which Vasek, legendary "Wandering Philosopher", seeks certainties in a cryptically insular, organic, critically layered city.

Oh, the +2 Cartography Amulets?IJBall wrote:They're sold by the innkeepers - they look kind of like clocks.Rebelicious wrote:Chronometer?

I mean, sure, everyone wants a little cartography, but in all honesty, aren't there much, much better amulets? Virtually anything is better than +2 Cartography.
By the way, anyone know when Cartography caps out?

Re: chronometer?
Those would be compasses. My lvl4 ranger has one... because 5 Cartography is better than 3 Cartography. (Actually, I leveled up 2 points in cartography when I found the amulet. I hate, hate, hate 1-point cartography. 2 points only colors the trees green instead of brown. 3 points colors the whole map light green. 5 points and you finally get to distinguish water from land.)Rebelicious wrote:Oh, the +2 Cartography Amulets?
Call me impractical: I just prefer an accurate, full-color map. It gives me a better sense of place, and to me that's more important than being able to deliver a couple of points extra damage.
Maybe when I find the cartography sandals I'll switch back to the +2 damage amulet . . . but, then again: being able to draw beaches would be nice... as well as being able to draw rural pathways.
(There are cartography sandals in Book 2, aren't there? Aren't there? Please say yes?)
By the way: a "chronometer" is just a watch. I don't see how a pocket watch is going to add to your mapping skills?
Funny that they're supposed to have been available in Book 1 and yet I've never seen one... .

Ah, yeah, of course. I was thinking of Compasses. I'm not sure I've seen any Chronometers anywhere. What're they for?Evnissyen wrote:[words]
Also, I'm sorry to let you down, but there doesn't appear to be any +2 Cartography shoes anywhere in Book II.
I know, it's made me sad too. But I'd think I would've found some by now, but I've never seen any. Maybe they're just ultra-rare.
It's one of the items I was counting on to still exist, too, mostly because I can't really see why they'd be removed. I'm sad to see them go (or be unlucky enough never to see any). On the other hand, I never saw any Brewmaster's Ring until my second playthrough, either.
And still, +2 Cartography in such a vital slot as Amulet, I dunno.. I think I'd rather just buy those 2 points. There are some really, really nice Amulets in Book II. For example, I've found much better Amulets than I've found rings, or anything else, really. Second only to weapons.

The chronometer looks like a box with clockwork in it.
Cartography functionally tops out at 17, when you start seeing people/creatures on the minimap before you can see them in the game screen.

Anyway... well... I suppose I can do without cartography sandals.

Also, thanks for the info on Cartography. I like having my map, but I haven't been sure just how many points to sink into it. 17 is probably a bit overkill, but at least now I know.

Re: chronometer?
The chronometer tells you the time. You right-click on it and the current Eschalon world time appears in the information window. This is helpful for people who prefer to stay in the dark as much as possible, since you can tell when it's night outside, so you can leave that dark cave.
