Nope, no such luck. First I turned on the tacgrid, then stood facing the fence with one (empty) tile between my character and the fence. I then opened my inventory and tried to place the keg in the empty tile. It (the game) always places it somewhere else; either next to my character, or one square farther away, behind my character. Tried it with the <Shift> key down - same result. Tried facing the wall; same result. I hope this is fixed in 1.04 before I waste time trying to d/l it only to find I still can't get through (without restoring an earlier save.) :( seriously unhappy here...
I hope someone can confirm this is a known bug in 1.03 that's fixed in 1.04. I may try d/l'ing it anyway just to see.

I've never heard of this problem from anybody. Maybe somebody from the beta testing group has seen it. You may want to upload a copy of your save game to BW (info <at> basiliskgames.com) with an explanation of the problem in your e-mail to see if he can figure out what's happening.

The deal with holding down the shift key is to turn your character to the direction you want to face. You must have the inventory screen closed while doing this (you can't move with your inventory screen open, and trying to turn gives odd results).

I've never had any problems dropping kegs, nor has anyone else in the alpha/beta group reported (openly, in the beta forum) this sort of problem.

And I have a lot of experience with placing powder kegs.

I think the problem is that you're picking up the keg and trying to place it by dropping it on the game screen. Don't do that. Right-click (or the Mac equivalent) on the keg in yout backpack to drop it in the direction your character is facing. I like to put a keg in my quickslots for easy access without opening my backpack... just don't try to pick-and-place.

The same technique is probably even more useful for the upcoming expansion in 1.05. It allows you to actually use those 5K experience points you would get for finding the second crux. Without kegs even if you have a save before the game end, you wouldn't be able to get back to Farrock because of those gates. Now you can  My mage is parked by the crux of fire eagerly waiting for 1.05 :)
