I'd feel like I was cheating if I didn't post a response here, so - if I were forced to rate my favorite indie games, right now I'd have to put Minecraft at the top, the Eschalon games next, and World of Goo after that. Kind of a cop-out answer, given both the forum and the prizes here, but there it is. Time will tell if Minecraft will hold onto that top spot, of course; I've had that one the least amount of time so far.

Oh, and I'm not entirely sure if it counts as an indie game or not, so I'll give some kind of honorable mention to The Ur-Quan Masters.

OK, several of you guys have sung the praises of Minecraft - can someone tell me what's so great about that game? Is it just the joy of creating your own world? Or is there more to it?...

Yep, that's pretty much all there is too it. Of course, there is an element of survival to it, and even a touch of role-playing. Overall though, it's kind of like having a giant endless LEGO set to make anything you want.

Well, there's also Zombies, Skeletons, Creepers, and Spiders, all trying to eat you...

And on that note, it looks like Round 3 is wrapping up with only 2 contestants... or should your posts be counted as entries IJBall and BW?

Yeah, as BW mentioned, it is mostly the open-ended LEGOness of it which has kept me going with it for so long now, though I do also enjoy the survivalish elements in singleplayer. The game's even more "sandboxy" than most because at the moment there's literally no explicit goal (apart from survival, if you've got monsters turned on). Eventually there's plans to add in an Adventure mode of sorts. So if you don't like sandbox type games then right now it's probably not for you, but if you do it may be worth a look. :)

Well, I have those games but I can gift them to our other beta testers. So yeah, count me in.

CB, I'd prefer that somebody needier than me get those games from you. ;)

You can put my name in though, I guess, if you can't figure out someone more worthy. (I'd nominate Unclever Title in my place if he'd been around here recently, which he hasn't... :( )

Why am I picturing IJ Ball in a WaynesWorld sketch, now?

You know... even though there's that part of me that feels left out... I suppose it's a good thing I don't share this mania for old-style indie games. It'd interfere with my literary mania.

Better to have just one mania and stick with it. Two manias, and you go crazy.
Certainty: a character-driven, literary, turn-based mini-CRPG in which Vasek, legendary "Wandering Philosopher", seeks certainties in a cryptically insular, organic, critically layered city.

I'd say it's not so much old-style game mania as it is just game mania in general. And having game mania is enough for two or three of any other manias. I speak from experience when I say it interfere's with my literary mania, my anime mania, my car mania... all of 'em. 0_o

Ok peoples, here's the lowdown on the shenanigans. The prize handout currently looks like this:

1. BasiliskWrangler - The Humble Indie Bundle
2. IJBall - World of Goo + Minecraft
3. xolotl - World of Goo
4. RezoApio - Nada (Foiled Again... ??)

However...

In the interest of keeping things interesting (for myself anyway 8) ), I'm going to throw another prize into the ring!! (*cue cheering*)

This prize has a twist... not even I know what it is!!

"What sort of whizbang gobbedeygook are you talking about, you crazy nutbag?" Is probably what some of you are asking... well you'll have to wait and find out!

(Note: this has nothing to do with the "Secret Prize" that's due for an unveiling.)

We're gonna do this a la gameshow style. Starting from the top, I'll ask BW if he wants to "stay" or "swap." If he chooses "swap" he gets "Prize X," and his prize shifts down to IJBall, then IJBalls shifts down to xolotl, etc. If he chooses "stay" he'll keep his current prize, and then "Prize X" get's shifted down, and then it's IJBall's turn to choose.

Sooo... this time everyone gets a prize... but who gets what?!?!? Let's find out.

First up.... BW, will you "stay" and keep the game alive, or succumb to your curiosity and "swap"??
