Just got this game today

Post by Renevent »

Like the topic says just got the game and so far (about 5 hours in) really enjoying it :D

Love the old school feel of it, and when I say old school I mean games before Baldur's Gate!

Graphics are nice, sound is good, and even the music is good. I enjoy the fact the game is pretty combat heavy and doesn't ram millions of lines of dialog down your throat...it feels like the perfect balance between story, exploration, dialog, combat, and managing your character.

If I could make one complaint though, it's the walking speed

Does the main character have molasses in his underpants or something? Is there some of way speeding this up?

Anyways overall enjoying the hell out of the game and well done to the folks who made this find game! Wish you much luck and hope you can continue to create cool games like this in the future.

If you are seeing really sluggish walking, it could be your computer. If you are running Windows, try the OpenGL option. If your graphics card is older, try dropping to 16-bit color instead of 32-bit color. These options are available on the Launch Menu.

Oh, and thanks for the kind words! :)

Renevent, the walking speed is largely a factor of your computer and graphics card's (and setting's) ability to generate the sprites. In particular, I know that laptops with Intel graphics built into the motherboard have really crappy performance. In the options, you can check the performance rating on your machine and try some of the other graphics options to see if they improve it. I've never had an issue with walking speed on my iMac, except that sometimes it walks faster than I can react and I get hit by some on-rushing creature.

Or see what BW himself said before me. ;-)

My specs:

Q6600@3.0ghz
4GB 1333mhz Ram
Nvidia 260 GTX Core 216
Windows 7 64bit
60GB SSD for OS
300GB SATA for games/apps

Baring some kind of weird compatibility/driver issue it's probably not my specs :P

Other than specs...is there anything I should check?

The game seems like it's running fine though. I'm not noticing any graphical hitches that I can tell.

Is it that speed, slower, faster ? (that's normal speed, I don't think it goes any faster)

With the middle mouse button, you can "lock" step, so you don't have to click all the time to move. It doesn't go any faster, but its less tedious.

Yeah that's about the same...some directions seem faster than other though I think that's just the angle or my perception, though.

I think it just feels overall slow and sluggish to me, not that there is something wrong. The game runs fine, just the walk speed in my humble opinion could be faster :P

*edit*

Oh and yeah, I did know about the 'walk' button...accidentally pressing the F1 has turned out to be a very helpful mistake lol.

I think part of that perception is due to the fact that the game plays like an action RPG even though it's turn based. If you're going from Book I to Book II, Book II has a pretty brisk pace. But if you've played games like Diablo where the character is always in run mode, it'll feel a little on the sluggish side. Best advice I could give you is to find the Quick Travel markers and use them as much as possible, and if you're a caster invest in the Portal spell. Proper use of fast travel will help quite a bit.

I wouldn't complain if the refresh rate were tweakable though. Maybe a "Turbo" button that doubles the frame output. ^_^

I've notice that character movement is faster in one direction than moving perpendicular to the faster direction.

That may be an optical illusion based on the isometric view of a square grid (and the difference between point-on squares and side-on squares).

I've noticed this too, and I assumed it was due to the isometric camera, but who knows?

Also, I have noticed that walking speed seems to relate to the number of trees in the area. I walk much more quickly in an open field, and much more slowly when I'm winding through a forest.

That's an issue with your graphics card and driver having difficulty rendering the complex sprites of all those trees. The card or driver may be optimized for different rendering methods and have difficulty with sprites, even though it's ostensibly new and powerful.
