russian language pack

I purchased a licensed version of the game, and in READMY.TXT file I found mention of the existence of different language pack. When I go to this link, I don't found any language pack ... searching the forums, I found mention of that work on them was begun in May, but since then, apparently, nothing has changed ... How you can get a Russian localization package (except to sit with the dictionary)?

The language add-ons fell through. While Book II supports additional language packs, no one ever finished the translation of the text files. We had hoped that fans would translate the game for us because to pay for professional "localization" can be very costly with no guarantee on the return on that investment. Unfortunately the task of translating all the game's text proved to be too big for most individuals to handle.

Still, if any finished translations are returned to us we'll be happy to post the for fans to download (for free).

hm.. i think, there are two problem:
1 - fans, who need language pack, dont know english in high level and can't tranclate this game normally.
2 - fans, who know english very well and can! tranclate this game, haven'n any reason to do this) they can play game normally on original language and dont wan't tranclate some txt files for.... nothing)

I see some threads on ours forums, where funs complained about the proposed scheme of localization... but it is not my business

in internet i see version 1.04 eschalon: book II with russian language support, but is not... very legally=)

You're right.
But there is reason to believe that a community of fans will grow. Then there will be people who know the language, capable of translating and having such a desire.

what technical requirements must be fulfilled to work on such a translation?
And about how many text we are talking here? How many words have to be translated at least?

I have enough time, I played the game in english and understood everything. So I'd be able to translate it to german in principle.
I'm not very experienced in dealing with special binary formats, converters and so on. But if there're only text-files i a way I would offer to do the job.

Ebi, if BW doesn't respond to you on these boards, I'd try either PM'ing or E-mailing him directly.

It's possible that BW has suspended the language packs project after the earlier lack of interest, but it's still worth a try to PM or E-mail him on the chance that he might take you up on your offer.

Sorry- yes I got a PM and just read this thread.

The problem is....I guess the task is too great for the average person. At one point we had:

Russian
Polish
Spanish
French
German
and even Japanese language packs in the works. Not one of them reached completion, except for Russian which was then used in pirated versions.

So, yeah, now I just ignore requests to translate the game because unless we actually pay to have it done professionally, it most likely won't be.

I don't know how it is in the states but here in germany one would say that it is e x t r e m e l y (!) impolite not to answer to a pm.
Even more it's unbelievable when it's a registered customer(!), who is ignored!!
But the top of effrontery is to imply that I'm a pirate.

Then you have to learn that you loose them, if you simply be so unpolite to ignore them.

How could you know, weather I'm a single person or not?
How could you know how much capacities I have? You didn't ask.

Cultural, not language barrier.
We are used to read between the lines much more here in germany. No need to say things directly. Of course that means to have a look while writing something.
And don't know about "the boy who cried wolf". Another cultural barrier?

For now, this is mostly true. However, after Book III is out I will likely make the text files available, free to download, to anyone who wants to give a shot at it. I just don't have time right now to assist in the task of translating.

It's an Aesop fable about a boy who keeps crying wolf, and when the real wolf finally shows up, the townspeople ignore him and the sheep are all eaten.

In other words, people keep bugging BW about translation but never follow through, so he has a hard time taking anyone who claims that they are going to fully translate Book II as being serious. Meanwhile he has actual work to do for the next game.

It's totally clear that there are many kid-fans, who don't have the long breath to survive such a project. That's normal and that was the reason why I asked for more details about the real amount of work. As a effect i could have had decided not to even start the job. Another effect could have been that all other interested translators hesitate in face of the amount of work too. But the base is to know how and how much. A additional point is my age and my experience with project work. So there is a difference in seriousness-level between enthusiastic fans and a elder project-experienced man. One can't put such a person in the same pot with non reliable teenagers. Call it experience of life. For having not much to loose at the end, it has been worth a chance, maybe. But there was the decision not to do, and so it's finished.

We will play Book III in English too and we will enjoy it. And the people, who aren't able to understand the language, will be outside a little bit. That's the decision and that's the fate.
