Lever in the blacksmiths shop???

Does anyone know what this lever is for?? its in the first town in the blacksmiths shop behind a chest, so to get to it you have to bash the chest, i tried this and moved the lever but i never noticed anything happening and it didn't say anything happened like it usually does when you move a lever??

Darn, I was hoping someone would have an answer for this by now, since I still have the blacksmith closed out of his shop.

Incidentally, I noticed there don't seem to be any consequences to "X has heard a crime being committed" even when X sees you coming out of his premises. Is that just to scare you? It's not as though they summon the guards.

it doesn't seem that there are any negative results if they only hear you, i think its basically a warning to let you know that someone is close by and might catch you, like if they have their back to you and they can hear you commiting a crime then you know if they face you you'll be caught.
