Rough going

Post by claudius »

Hi I finally got to evermore and the problem is that I am not very strong, even two wolfs I can kill one with my special move (hammer) and then run from the other wolf, pitch a tent and heal. It is very underwhelming :(

I have a hammer that does 3 base damage. And a bow (1 pt) for a little range attack if needed.

Level Apprentice 5?

Strength 20
dexterity 15
endurance 20
speed 15
int 15
wis 15
perception 15
concentration 20

bludgeon 12
cartography 3
Medicine 3
Forage 2 (trainer)
Bow 1 (trainer)
Mercantile 1
Light Armor 1

One mistake I see was paying for forage 2 this early when I should have bought a steel mace...

I'm debating whether I should just roll up a magic user?

But I welcome any thoughts.

My quick thought is that, if you're playing a Fighter (or any melee combat-based character), you really need to max-out END more than you have.

END=20 (with STR=20) is only netting you +7 HP on Level-Ups. You really should have your END=30 (and, by Level 5, END=40 or END=45 is really what you should be shooting for) - you need to be netting at least +8-10 HPs on Level-Up if you're going to play a melee fighter.

Thanks! Yeah I wasn't sure how to put stats. I figured I would need the int/wis/perception later for a touch of spells.

Have you played a warrior before? If so what was your endgame stats (roughly).. For example Str ? Dex ? End ? Sp ? Int ? Wis ? Per ? Conc ?

Another question. On endurance is the HP gain retroactive? Do you know what I mean by that?

No, an Endurance increase only affects HP from that point on. See http://eschalon.wikia.com/wiki/Ability_Scores#Endurance

Great!

Should I just throw everything in endurance? Do I need more damage from STR? Or armor from dex?

Ranged combat characters (magic users and bow users) definitely have an easier time in Book II than melee characters, but you can complete the game with all sorts.

I'd say your big mistake was spreading your points too thinly if you plan to go toe-to-toe with groups of creatures. As Shroom said, for that you'd want to pump End early and often and forget about the mental stats until later. There are items that can help you with them when it comes time to learning a touch of magic.

As for buying a better weapon, you can do that, but there are usually plenty to find lying around if you take some detours to beat up on a few Outlander encampments. They're great for gaining experience and finding good stuff to use or sell.

Edit: thank you for the suggestions

Ok how about (at same level)

cartography 3 (so I remember where to go)
light armor 1
mercantile 1
bludgeon 17
forage 1 (trainer)
bow 1 (trained)

Or should I go more light armor?

And then should I put all my pts in endurance? I am wearing light armor but I can raise strength if I need more to wear my armor.. I have 15 do you think more? I have 15 wis/int. For level 1 spells. I rolled stats over until I had a *REALLY* high score and then saved the character.

As far as items I am not reloading so they might not be too good.

It's generally accepted that you don't need to put more than one point into each armor skill to effectively use that armor.

Strength is good for attack power and carrying capacity, but if you're having trouble taking hits then you should bump up the Endurance a bit more, or add the Shield skill (nods to Kreador).

Good items will come, or show up in the shops eventually, so don't worry about not using the reload trick.

Increasing bludgeoning will decrease the time between using you feats. Try to stay away from range attacking monsters until you are higher level and you will be fine in a few more levels.
