What to play while waiting for Book III?

Post by NathanEschalon »

I'm about to finish my 4th run through Book II (I did Paladin/Cleric, Pure Mage, Unarmed/Monk, and Archer). I can't think of another class I want to play through now, so I guess it's time to find another game until Book III arrives!

Any suggestions on games similar to Eschalon? I love the multiple class/race/weapon choices rooted in swords/armor/magic realms. I like supporting the indie developers too rather than the big beasts list Bethesda (plus my computer is too old to handle the fancy new graphics anyway).

Suggestions welcome!!

If you haven't tried Spiderwebs' new Avernum: Escape From The Pit, you should. It's a fun, challenging, isometric turn-based RPG. It uses a party, rather than a single PC (though you can make it a party of 1 if you really love a challenge). It's extremely open-world, which means you can easily wander into places where you'll get your ass handed to you. Avadon (also Spiderweb) is a lot more linear, but still a lot of fun.

I second Avadon, even though a party type game, its really fun. So fun i bought the Ipad and Pc versions.

Avernum sounds like a winner! Thanks for the tip! The website says no PC version of Escape from the Pit until April though! (No Macs here)

Maybe I'll try the second trilogy (Avernum 4, 5, 6)

Anyone else have any favs?

I'm having a lot of fun with Dungeons of Dredmor right now and of course Terraria. Neither is classed based (Terraria is more platformer, so there aren't any actual skills or leveling up). They're both easy to pick up and put back down without much fuss once you've learned them.

There is another SpiderWeb series called Geneforge, which is also terrific. Why don't you download a couple of different demos and see which ones trip your trigger?

Personally, I'm replaying Ultima 6, perhaps the most Eschalon-esque of the Ultima games. The graphics are a little primitive, but it's well worth the investment of getting used to.

If anyone else would care to try it, you can get the game itself from various abandonware sites, and it plays quite well under DOSBox.
