Exceeding my expectations

Post by Old School Gamer »

I just wanted to put in a word of encouragement, I finally was able to purchase the game, and it's definitely very good,

I could say that it is really, really good for an indy game, but I think the line between indy and big production games is blurring, besides the fact that 95% of big production games cater to the ADD crowd alone. This game is superb; it's got a very strong Ultima 7 feel to it I think, and it has the same feel to it as the great games of the past; speaking from my own experiences, if you take the fact that I put down Oblivion within a couple of days, feeling more and more like it was an empty world, and with this game I'm more and more pulled in by the hour, the difference is very plain and clear.

Computer games are not big glitzy movies, they are basically board games taken to new heights; many people want to use their imaginations and minds in a game, not adrenaline. You've pulled this off superbly.

I also think you pulled off the backstory very craftily, in terms of the player's experience and what is happening with the in-game character; the player's own experience of exploring a new world is echoed in the story of the character exploring it. Somehow it's not a cliche amnesia plot as a person might think in first hearing about the story, it's better than that, because it applies the player's experience to the in game character's experience in a way that I'm not sure has been done before. (But I'm not sure exactly what it is that makes this so)

Anyway, I just wanted to put in a good word; if this game were released around '94 or so, it would be a classic I think.

Also, you might perhaps want to extend the demo a bit; I felt like the areas that you can't get into in the demo are more fleshed out, more inspired and more interesting than the demo areas, and I kind of feared that I wouldn't be pulled in by the first few hours after the demo ends, but I found that the hours immediately after the demo areas were more intriguing than the demo areas.

But this game is top quality, don't let any ADDers' opinions that might be out there tarnish how you feel about the game, it's plain compelling and how many AAA games made today can say that? This game is the top tier stuff that was being made before the '98-'04 gaming slump occurred.

I just wanted to echo what Old School Gamer said here. I used to play RPGs all the time, but gave them up for lack of time due to family, work, etc. This one has pulled me back in (to quote a little Godfather 3). I feel myself stealing time from other things just to keep playing.

Has there been given any thought (forgive me if this has been discussed) to use of day/night cycles for the citizenry for Book 2? This would add a tremendous amount of realism.

Great job!

I'll agree with you (and broken friction, it's half past 3 in the morning now, always a good sign for imersion & addiction). But if you you played Oblivion and found it lacking, try it's predecessor Morrowind (preferably with tribunal expansion) which is a far better game as an RPG in every respect.

I personally agree that this is a top quality game. I got the demo and played for about 42 minutes when I suddenly realized that I'd HAVE to finish it. So before I went and played any further thinking that with the full game I'd have to start over, I went to the web site to see if it was released yet... LOL I lucked out. It was released that same day, if I read it correctly anyway.

Thank you for making such a fantastic game!
