A few pounds isn't worth giving up more damage for. If the higher level swords weighed 20 pounds, then that would be quite different.

In Book II, it might be nice to have short-bladed based off dex+speed and possibly give some kind of sneak attack bonus when using them (doesn't have to be insane damage, but maybe a +1 tohit and +1 damage per 5 skill levels type thing). However, if mechanics change and you allow us to bring our character over, please allow a respec (could be a minimal respec, like allow us to swap one weapon skill for a different one). :)
I can think of one sword (around the mid game) that weighs 12 pounds, 11 base damage most powerful weapon i've seen so far).

I bought that dagger from a vendor when I was playing. I think the big difference is in early/mid game. I used a 1 damage dagger until level 5 or 6, then got a 3 damage and used it until level 11, and finally got the 5 damage. I'm already using a 5 damage sword at level 5 with my new character.

Since loot is random (and I'm pretty sure that chest drop you got was random, I don't remember getting a dagger there), I may have just got unlucky, but since there are fewer short-bladed weapons than the other types you are more likely to get caught with unlucky drops if using short-bladed weapons.

That chest is fixed(although possibly dependant on character class), it had exactly the same loot when I reloaded and tried it again.

I think I went to her after I already had the dagger, so that may be why I don't remember it.
