So I seriously cannot wait for the official modding tools

Post by Sinathor »

Hey guys. Like the topic says, I'm dying to get my hands on the official modding tools. To slightly calm down the burning, I've been playing around with the unofficial tools. I thought I'd show you guys what I've gotten done.

This took me around 30 minutes to make, although it doesn't have any interactive objects yet, but that wouldn't take longer than another 30 mins.

Tell me what you think ^^

Edit: Whole image can be seen now.

Nice work. :)

I imagine that a lot of fans are looking forward to getting both the tools and the results, especially as the current game seems very well done but rather short. I've enjoyed making small mods for other games but I must admit that trying to write decent plots and puzzles was often harder than doing the layouts. So it will be interesting to see what gets done.

What do you like doing - extra areas, fully scripted stories, or what? Do most mods just add a side quest to the main game, or are more ambitious stand alone efforts possible too?

Hope you don't have to wait too long to get the full kit of tools. :)

Also - show pic works ;)

Well, it`s a good start - now it`s time for a good story and clever scripting.

I just wonder, what will official editor be, wouldn`t mind some spoilers or teasers :P

I mean - if it`s going to be significally different or easier to use than what we have, is it worth waiting, or one can do almost the same in the unofficial one.

Mapping and level design is seriously my area, but I also love writing, both lore and dialogue. However, while being decent in these areas, I am terrible at scripting and coding. I can do it a bit, but definitely rusty.

I would love to make scenarios seperate from the main game. I have tons of lore written that I haven't used for anything, so if scripting quests and the like won't become too much of a hassle, I think I could make something substantial in a relatively short time.

I couldn't use Show Picture, so I saved it and then opened it. Looks really good!

I admire that you had the patience to individually paint EVERY LAST ONE of those trees! Making coastlines is especially tedious in xolotl's editor (I take you are using that?).

Thanks ^^

Yeah, I use xolotl's editor and well, yeah, it's a bit painful for not having a brush, especially with water, but you only need to do it once. I've used so many different map editors and I've seen some extremely unintuitive ones as well and I can say that this is one of the least frustrating to use, so it's all fine.

I can imagine unintuitiveness getting annoying if I'm gonna start making a larger project. But we'll see what the official tools are like.
