Can of Worms
Can of Worms
Actually not Fair (I may get in trouble for this but) you open the Can of Worms http://www.basiliskgames.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=825 then close it I think we should be allowed to talk and Debate about this Issue - NOT only does it effect Basilisk Games in a BIG way but it also Effects the legitimate Purchasers of the product who hope to see the light of day of Book 2

I apologize Iane. I didn't mean to open a can of worms. My intention was not to generate discussion from people wondering who purchased the game and who didn't, the pros and cons of copy protection, or whether or not our coverage is wide enough. Those are all fair topics, but not really what I intended the thread to be. Each one of those topics could probably use it's own thread in the General Discussion forum.
The message was simply an appeal from a small developer to a few people who may have acquired a free copy of the game: if you like what we're doing here, help us out so we can keep making games.

Fully Understood and no need to apologizeBasiliskWrangler wrote:I apologize Iane. I didn't mean to open a can of worms. This topic really hits home with me. I want to see more games like this made so badly. This type of thing happening really affects all of us not just Basilisk...Unfortunately it's one of the bad things about living in the internet age, it just makes doing things like that so much easier. You had pirating back before the internet but it was much harder to distribute so it didn't get out of hand like it does now.
I realize there isn't much we can do about it other than what Basilisk did so more power to them and I hope it works. I guess the starving college students without money to by the game might not get it anyway, but hopefully you reached out to some of the other people that downloaded a copy.
I also think if people had any idea how much work goes into a game like this it might change their views on pirating a copy of the game. 30$ for a game that keeps you entertained for countless hours is well worth the purchase.
Wish there was more that I could do. I have pimped the game to my friends and tried to spread the word best that I can.
Sorry I ranted a bit, but this topic gets me super frustrated, I can only imagine what's its like for the Basilisk Dev's.

I'd like to agree with macdude22 about the Mac sales being good (and I suspect they will be pretty good for a small install base), but there are Mac forums out there where folks roll their eyes at equating pirating software to theft then go on to ask for an invite to the latest torrent site. Mac users pirate just like everybody else. Tapeworms are tapeworms no matter the OS they run. Sux.
At least I'll buy the game and others I know of will as well. Hopefully the Mac sales will offset the parasites and we'll get a Book 2 on the Mac as well.

I would also like to offer my apologies to Basilisk Wrangler because I am partially to blame for derailing his intention for the thread. So sorry you guys. I did not realize at the time but I see it now. I certainly admire the honesty of the appeal and they are right in that the discussion is best left to other threads.

What is a man, If his chief good and market of his time Be but to sleep and feed? a beast, no more. Sure, he that made us with such large discourse, Looking before and after, gave us not that capability and god-like reason to fust in us unused.
Totally agree. I live in the UK and I like a beer, I can spend more than what this game cost in less than three hours in my local pub. I have been playing the game for more than 20 hours (still haven't finished) so it easy to see which is better value for money. Besides the game doesn't give me headaches, well other than trying to beat those Raptors.macdude22 wrote:Costs me $30 bones to take the wife to a movie, this is a steal.

Sadly, there is very little us legitimate users can do other than encourage people to buy the game. Hopefully, I am reading this wrong but do I detect that sales so far have been lower than expectation and Book II is in danger? Actually, you probably can't answer that question, but I hope I am wrong as I would love to see Book II.
BW I think probably you could prune out the posts that went into pros/cons of protection and move them into their own thread. Leaving the main thread as it was. A call to those that did get a pirate copy to also pay for it. Like I did after I tried it. I know this is possible using this forum system

Eschalon or a tasty newcastle. Thats a tossup of which one is better though.....but if combined into one tasty gaming Newcastle night. The possibilities of max awesomeness are staggering.focus wrote:I live in the UK and I like a beer, I can spend more than what this game cost in less than three hours in my local pub.
There are a fair share of Mac pirates, in my experience maybe a small percentage less, but probably nominally less. It's been my experience that Mac users are more likely to pay for software, especially shareware. I think it's because we've become accustomed to a large amount of quality shareware. Don't get me wrong though, I know Mac and Windows users that both refuse to pay for anything, they say why pay for what you can get for free. Because I like a continual stream of new content be it games, books, movies, etc..... That's why I pay.Leej wrote:I'd like to agree with macdude22 about the Mac sales being good (and I suspect they will be pretty good for a small install base), but there are Mac forums out there where folks roll their eyes at equating pirating software to theft then go on to ask for an invite to the latest torrent site. I am playing a pirated copy of the game.
I would gladly pay 40$ for this ingenious game + CD and stuff, because I really like it, but I don't have CC or PayPal, only Webmoney account. IF Basilisk accepts webmoney, just pm me your WMZ wallet #, and you'll receive a just payment. If not, I am terribly sorry :/.
