Help! Grimhold quest disappeared before I did it!

Post by Jude »

I think I may be in trouble. I got the quest from the dying soldier about having to go north and find the alternate way to get past the goblins, but when I then took the northern route, the quest disappeared from my journal. I'm not sure exactly when it happened, but I hadn't even entered the underground maintenance area yet.

I went back to the soldier, but he was dead so I couldn't get the quest again. Right now, I'm trying to clear the maintenance tunnel, but I am wondering if I should even bother or if I should restart the game. Can I still complete the quest without it being in my journal?

Pretty upsetting...

Well, I reset the area by leaving the areas and deleting the 3 map files (using the instructions from the "missing brother" bug thread, but with the maintenance maps).

Then I discovered that if I agreed with what the soldier said, I wasn't given a journal entry, but if I disagreed and said I would fight all the goblins head on or whatever the choice was, then I was given the Secondary Water Switch journal entry. (Had to go back to my saved game from outside the areas to try the other dialogue option) So something is a bit screwy with this quest.

Anyway, I am assuming that it is better to actually have the quest written in your journal, so that is the one I am going with.

Maybe I'm not understanding your question. But if you got the quest to go find the alternate northern route, and then you went and found the northern route, didn't you actually complete the quest? That's why it "disappeared." If you take that quest from the dying soldier, you are not tasked to go through Grimmhold and therefore you don't need to go to the maintenance area, right?

The other branch, the one you took when you re-loaded the fresh map, is the one that sends you into Grimmhold and the maintenance area.

I don't think your first play-through was broken at all.

But I never found the Northern Route. I think I was just following the route north through the goblin barracks area and then the path to the maintenance area when I noticed that I didn't have a quest for it in my journal. And when I reset it and agreed with the soldier, I didn't get a journal entry, although the quest should have been reset, right?

I think the "Northern Route" means going via Bordertown and down through Tangletree Forest, Jude - i.e. not going through Grimmhold at all.

I agree, that's the way I interpreted that message.

I know. That's my point. I DIDN'T complete the Northern route quest the first time, and yet, the journal entry wasn't there after I agreed with the dying soldier to take the northern route. I think there's a bug. Anyone else who is about talk to the soldier in Grimmhold East, see if your journal gets (or stays) updated after you agree with him, and post her, okay?

I don't remember this that clearly, by my recollection of this is that the actual quest was to go through Grimmhold - taking the Northern route was refusing the quest.

I have a side question. After completing the secondary maintenance switch quest aren't the main gate connecting east and west above ground supposed to open? I did everything I thought and have gone through again and the nothing seems to get the main gates open. I know I can just quick travel to east and west if I wanted, but I want those dang gates open.

AIR when you do the Grimmhold maintenance dungeon, just before you find a ladder to go back up to Grimmhold West, there's a room with water in it and a switch. I think this is the switch that cuts off the water and allows the gates to open.
