Slow Walking

Post by arlinora »

Is anyone else having problems with this? There are certain areas where my character slows down and moves at maybe half speed. This happened a little bit in E1 (mainly in a section of Tanglewood). But in E2 there are numerous places where this happens. For instance, there's a section near my house, another section towards the far east of that map, and all of the path through Wolfenwood. It's really annoying and I don't know why it happens.

I noticed this too. Mostly character slows down a little outside, and walks faster in dungeons. First I thought that it was because of my computer performance, but hey, game is 2D. No polygons. All units are sprites. Nothing to slow down computer. Also when I finished my 1st game, I had very low wish to replay - only because character moves like a turtle.

Well, I found a way to increase speed of turns, so character, as well as animals, walks much faster, but unfortunately it violates license in point "Limitations on Reverse Engineering, Decompilation and Disassembly", so I am not allowed to post here, on official forum. I may post only with BasiliskWrangler's permission.

If I haven't rebooted in a while, I have similar slow walking issues. My graphic card isn't for gaming. In the Options screen, you can set the graphics to low-res and that helps a bit.

Also try different rendering options on the launch menu- OpenGL, DX7 or DX9. Each one is optimized for different hardware.

BW: I've tried all 3 rendering options and it does the same in all of them.

I'll check my version number though, in case I missed an update.

My character is almost always slow, just speeding up in spurts. I have V1.02.

For users with slow walking characters, could you post your hardware/video specs? I experienced slow downs on a brand-new Tablet/Laptop with an Intel GMA 4500MHD. I have yet to max out the ram, but Integrated Graphics and Gaming generally don't get well together (the machine excels at portability/battery life). I have also found that if I reboot before playing, the game/walking moves quicker in the 'graphic-intense' areas. I run a small program that kills many background processes and walking speed improves. Lastly, I also played extensively on a Mac G4 PowerBook and a G5 eMac and the walking speed was fine, so that bodes very well for next weeks Mac release.

I changed to directx7 and it helped. I still have to give him a kick with the tab key.

I may have figured out the problem. I've updated all my drivers, etc. and gone to v1.02. But I'm using a dual core 1.91 Ghz processor. Does the game support dual processors?

Multiprocessing shouldn't have an effect on the game. Generally people experiencing slowdowns are using integrated graphics with shared memory.

But if the minimum requirement is 2 Ghz processor, and I'm only getting 1.91 once, then wouldn't that mess it up?

Not necessarily. Processor speed is only one part of the equation, and not all processors were created equal. For instance, here are the specifications of the nine-year-old notebook I'm currently playing on:

1.7GHz Pentium 4 Processor
1GB DDR RAM
Radeon 7500 Video Chip w/32MB of Dedicated DDR RAM

Despite having a slower processor, and only 1/4th of the required video ram, I experience very little slowdown. This is because my video card has dedicated memory, and properly supports the required OpenGL functions. As long as I play the game in OpenGL mode, I get good speeds. If I switch to DirectX 7 or 9, the game gets very sluggish.

Computers using any type of Intel graphics chip use shared video memory, and do not have good OpenGL acceleration. Other graphics chips might run the DirectX modes better, but as a general rule OpenGL is the fastest.

My video card has 512 Mb RAM, my computer has 2Gb RAM, but the darn game still won't work properly.

edit: And I'm using AMD, not Intel, for my processor.
