Interface issues

Post by omgtifb »

Just started playing, but here's a short list of issues that are annoying:

1. Buying in a store from a stack of items brings up a window that allows you to choose the number to buy. The default number is zero. It should be one. This window should accept keyboard input. Using a slider to select between, say, 1 and 2 is absurd.

2. The "take all from container" button is tiny. It is an annoying pixel hunt to use that button. It should be bigger and it should have a hotkey assigned to it.

3. Escape key should exit out of the "nice doing business with you" window after dealing with a vendor.

4. Maintaining the two separate equipment lists is really annoying. If you pick up a better piece of armor and put it on, you also have to make sure both your preset equipment lists contain it or it will be taken off next time you switch. This is made more annoying by the fact that you can't switch between equipment lists while in the inventory / equipment screen.

I assume most of these have been brought up before.... maybe I'm missing something.

Thanks for any feedback.

Why can't you switch between equipment presets while in the inventory and equipment screens? You can't do it while a vendor screen is up (too large), but the inventory screen and paper doll equipment screen leave plenty of room above the tool bar to click the preset buttons and swap equipment.

I agree that remembering to update your preset settings when you get new equipment can be annoying, but I don't see how the program could be changed to make it any different. If you don't have the old item in your inventory when you click change, then the new item will remain on your character. However, they haven't yet made these programs psychic enough to know when you're just trying something on and when you want to update your standard equipment settings, so for now you have to remember to click that extra button yourself.

It's a pretty big hassle to replace a piece of eq other than a weapon or shield.

Weapons and shields account for 99% of the need to switch items for "different equipment sets". That means that for anybody who wants to use the "different equipment sets" functionality, every time they switch in a piece of armor or a ring or an amulet or a helm etc, they have to do the following:

1) equip the new item
2) set the pre-set for the currently selected item set (1 or 2)
3) select the preset for the other item set (2 or 1)
4) equip the new item again
5) set the pre-set for the other item set (2 or 1)
6) revert to the original item set (1 or 2)

six steps friend. Not a "single extra click". It's an insane overhead for using the item sets functionality.

One better way to do it, among I am sure many, would be for shift+equip to mean "set this item into both item sets".

This complexity presents itself mostly at the beginning of the game, which is exactly when a developer needs to keep things simple. First impressions are the most important.

It is insidious in that unless one follows those 6 painstaking steps above, a good item can be unequiped easily without the player knowing it.

One other simple thing that should be implemented is giving a visual indication of whether it's ok to camp at any given time. The camp icon should look one way when it's ok and another way when it's not.

Regarding camping - I'm not so sure I agree with you. If you had a warning that you couldn't camp, you would also be warned that enemies were near. Half the fun of this sort of game is running around and getting in trouble because you weren't careful enough IMHO.

The information is always available by clicking the button. So far, from what I can tell, mouse busywork is a real problem in this game. Too many clicks and too much mouse movement to get from one click to the other. Looting containers/loot bags is the biggest problem. Go on a pixel hunt for the tiny bag, then pixel hunt the green "take all" button that appears across the screen. It is really annoying.

I think getting the shortcut key for changing weapons/armor sets back (Chant: "Bring back the Enter key! Bring back the Enter key!!..." :P  ) is more crucial.

But, yeah, shortcut keys for both (and the Alchemy mixer, and the "Get All" button, and the 'Stats' screen!) would definitely be cool... 8)

As bad as the click bag/loot all problem is the "buy or sell from a stack of items" problem. Way too much "choose how many" and way too many confirmation clicks. It's wrong in so many ways. First, shift+click should just buy or sell one from a stack (or a single item) without confirmation, period. That alone would solve 90% of the issues.

As it is, often when you sell, you are selling from a stack of 2 or more. Oh boy is that annoying.

Click the thing you want to sell.

Click Yes to the inevitable confirmation dialog, which appears in the middle of the screen, some distance from your mouse cursor.

The amount dialog now pops up. Pixel hunt the "amount slider", which defaults to zero (the only number guaranteed to be what you don't want), and slide it, in almost all cases, all the way to the right.

Click "ok".

Ridiculous busywork.

Shift click to sell a single item without confirmation would be a godsend.

I think you're greatly exaggerating the pixel hunt for the "take all" button. A shortcut key would be nice though, especially one for changing combat mode.
It's a very small button, and the mouse has a slight lag when playing full screen at non-native resolution. That causes problems for precise mouse movement.

I've never noticed a mouse lag problem. Playing at 1680x1050 resolution.

Excuse my ignorance, but how *exactly* do you get a resolution of 1680 x 1050? I thought it was 1024 x 768... Did I miss something? Thanks.

That's the resolution of the monitor I play the game on. With regards to the previous poster's comment about playing it on a non-native resolution, that's what I was responding to.
