server down whirr whirr . . . RELIABLE HOSTS

Post by Evnissyen »

Okay, so... GL -- both journal and catalog . . . down for more than a week, now. Dead server.

You know... if you're sick or whatever, you're supposed to have somebody there to switch to backup in case something goes wrong.

This guy... I get no emails from him, now (even though he can easily get my email from WhoIs, aside from which he should have it down on paper anyhow), and he doesn't respond to my phone calls.

...The guy used to be really good, service-wise, which is why I stuck with him so long.

I'm beginning to worry that this is going to be indefinite if not permanent.

So... it's radical procedure time. New host, new domain name, start all over.

I need a reliable host. I mean like... never goes down for more than a few hours. ...Which should be the norm... this seems a little ridiculous to me.

Anyone have any ideas? What hosts have you used which you think are super-reliable, etc.?

Go with a real company, not just "a guy". We use GoDaddy, and while they are not perfect, we've stayed up nearly full-time sine 2006.

You're right, BW, thanks . . . I just put in an order with godaddy and got a new domain.

Now to set everything up again with my backup files... then notify Duotrope, Selby's List, all my contributors... everyone else... sigh... .

Man... this sucks.

Well... in case anyone cares, I established a new host and new domain (accessible below), everything is now switched over. Whee!

...No, I'm sure nobody cares... :|

A friend of mine has been trying to get me to move over to his kick-ass most-awesome-hosting-site-in-the-world, but I think BW's right . . . no more indie outfits for me... especially with the massive database I'm trying to arrange.

More on that in the near future, hopefully.

...At any rate: old host: still down.

I think they're gone for good.

Spent all night yesterday replacing files... then collecting all the emails from everyone who's ever sent me any material and, of course, everyone who's been or will be published there, and then sent out a mass bcc... then Duotrope, who probably will not update their listing for another month... . Well... maybe I'll be surprised and people will be über-interested, all of a sudden: a new dawn! Or something... . :|

In case anyone else is interested in such things, I highly recommend http://www.dreamhost.com.

I've had an amazing experience with them and their customer service, and haven't noticed any downtime since I've signed up with them.
