Trying to lockpick a door in a town and someone is close they will hear a crime in progress but at the same time if I fireball the Door noone hears anything so noone hears a explosion but they hear your lockpick
Yes, nobody comes to investigate (or if they do they come real slow). With a potion of invis you can actually kill one character in front of another I believe.

Yes, there is room for improvement here, for example I am planning on making the next game having radius alerts (NPCs yelling "help!" or "thief!") that will trigger others to come to their aid. It works like this now with sight, just not sound. Just as nonameform pointed out, people seeing you commit a crime is worse than someone hearing you. This will get changed.
Other than that, I will never make Eschalon's focus about NPCs having hyper-realistic lives. I still find Oblivions "Radiant AI' about the biggest joke that has ever been played on gamers, and if an entire team of AI programmers can't perfect it, then I am not even going to try. As long as Eschalon's NPCs defend themselves and their property and have a basic understanding of the world around them, I'll be happy with it. I will promise to try and make each game show a marked improvement in NPC AI.
