Does cartography work? My character is a fighter who don't know much magic but do have level 10 cartography. I tried to walk around the map in which the gate is located but didn't find any number-like pattern on my map.

No, only the spell works. Unlike Cartography, the spell doesn't require line of sight to the things you're mapping.

Might be too late now, but if you use brightness booster at 100% (in options), and it's day, and not raining, you can see the answer without the use of the spell.
