It is a great game. It's also a lithmus test for whether a person is a fan of cRPGs at all.

Adventure gamers don't like Wiz8.

Would be a GREAT game, but leveling monsters is a downer. :(

Leveling monsters were within a certain range. Easier places never spawned the very difficult monsters. The designers split the difference between complete area-dependent monster levels and complete character-dependent monster levels ...

Great series, at least up to 3. 3 + expansions was the best of the series, I think. Good, but not great, balance, and fun, polished gameplay. I loved the style of the graphics - cartoonish but beautifully drawn.

Looks interesting, but no harm in letting it cook for another year or two before diving in.

In PnP rpgs, a player only plays one character so it's a much more personal experience as well as a group tactical process which is much more engaging. But at least the mechanics of play in ToEE are the same as PnP, which I guess is the best that could be said for a d&d based cRPG.

 You ...

I personally don't think real time combat will ever be able to do a very good job of recreating the pen and paper role playing game experience.

I agree with that. I don't think even computer turn-based combat comes close.

One of the nice things about the "real-time" Baldur's Gate games is that you could set the options to pause the game whenever just about anything happened, and then think and choose what to do, so it was more like a turn-based game.

Jude

That was an awfully unfun way to play though, since it ...

my original Plimus email was filtered to my Spam folder. I didn't immediately notice it there, even though I did think to look, because a bunch of other Spam I'd gotten over the past weeks since I'd last cleaned out the spam folder, had post-dated delivery dates. So, the Plimus email was actually ...

ToEE has a great ruleset, D&D, faithfully reproduced in detail, including the most important detail, having turn based combat just like the PnP version. That makes it one heck of a fine cRPG. :)

Horace2,

I have played all the Infinity Engine games and TOEE. I consider them all to be cRPGs. I have played a host of text-based adventure games (Infocom), Scott Adams, Level 9), adventure games (King Quest) and lots of cRPGs. IMHO, I do not see the Infinity Engine games as adventure games ...

So...

I've never played the ToEE computer game, but I have both played the original modules and run them as a DM. Good old Village of Hommlet. The story doesn't seem particularly groundbreaking now, but what's horribly cliche now wasn't quite as cliche when it first came out or when a newer, not ...

You're totally wrong Horace2. I won't explain why, others have done it. RPG means Role Playing Games. Role-Playing. Level is common in rpg, but the quintessence of rpg is communication. Diablo is not a true rpg. Baldur's gate, arcanum, fallout, neverwinter nights are rpg.

Your definition does not ...

i watched a combat video and it appeared to be suffering from feature creep, always a sign that the game designers don't really know what they're doing. We'll see though!!
